Euro cruise disaster

Was there any odd noise before it blew the oil out mate?

Tony.

Just a ticking scraping sound, that I thought was a sticky brake pad or may be I had a puncture. I wound the window down and pulled over straight away and turned the engine off. The oil light didn't come on either.

Just before I pulled over the guys following me heard a bang, but can't say I did.

Good luck Gary. If your boy is so keen on a transplant, let him lay on his back and you supervise.

I might just give him the car and let him get on with it. He's an engineer himself, a graduate from Swansea Uni. He works in Petro Chem industry for a company that builds and services fuel loading arms, ship to shore etc and floating roofs for gas tanks.

He's already rebuilt an old 1.8 Golf engine so he's well capable

Sounds to me most likely an ancillary of the engine rather than the engine itself mate. Time will tell, hope it's not terminal. Good luck.

Tony.

If he's in the petro chem industry maybe he can change it to run on rocket fuel. :racecar:

Had a text today from RAC to inform me that my Zed will be delivered to my home around mid day tomorrow. Only problem I had was that I'm 250 miles away in Portsmouth.
However, a quick phone call to the office and my request for a hastily arranged day off was accepted, so I'll be up at the crack of dawn tomorrow to go and welcome my car back home.
That's excellent news Gary. At least your Zed will be at home and you can start the process of getting it back on the road

great to hear you going to be re united with your car hope the repair is a simple one and be great to hear you have got it sorted... keep us all posted...

Al...

My car arrived just before mid day today and in some comfort too =)) She was the only car on the transporter all the way from Brugge. The driver told me that he delivered a couple of new Aston Martin's to a dealer in Belgium and collected my car from the BMW dealer in Brugge on Monday afternoon and was told to deliver it to me before his next job.

Look forward to hearing what you find.

She's tucked up in the garage now but I couldn't resist a quick look under the bonnet. The engine covers are off, she's been refilled with fresh oil and had 6 new spark plugs so there has been an attempt to get her going. The CVV or the oil lines doesn't look like they're ruptured but don't have time to have a closer look today.
I have to head back to Pompey, but I'm home Friday afternoon and then I can have a better look.

Glad to see the car was in first class and not economy, were are to getting it repaired?
Howard in Redruth?

Next step is to have a good look myself before I decide.

pehaps you could get your engine reconned, which would then retain the original engine which always seems better

Had a few jobs to do over the weekend but managed a quick half hour in the garage. It's a mystery that I can't see where all the oil was leaking from. There aren't any ruptured pipes or hoses from what I could see. I used a LED torch and some mirrors to get a decent look but to no avail.

The CCV and its pipework is in one piece and is not oil stained. It has not been replaced by BMW in Brugge, well not with a new one anyway.

When I stopped on the motorway in Belgium the oil was peeing from my engine and was witnessed by the guys who stopped to help me

Nothing has leaked onto the garage floor either. I tried to turn the engine over and although she turned over very easily there was a "sucking" sound ?????

There was no sign of the engine firing up. Thought about squirting some brake cleaner into the air intake to help ignition but decided not to.

I did some internet searches on known weaknesses of the M50, M52 and M54 engines and it seems they are all prone to similar problems, ie, overheating, CCV problems and more scarily weak piston rings.

Further investigation into CCV failure told me similar symptoms to what I experienced, ie a "whistling sound" prior to me stopping.

I need to do a compression test to see if my piston rings are good and get my diagnostics kit out when I find where I put the computer lead during my last garage clean up.

Any ideas anyone?

Have you checked the oil level on the dipstick, did the garage in Bruge top it up ? Just wondered how much it threw out. Compression test definitely a good start, but remove all plugs and have battery fully charged beforehand.

Tony.

The engine oil has been topped up. When I was at the recovery garage in Brugge I checked the oil once the engine had cooled and it was just showing on the bottom of the dipstick, so I had lost a good couple of litres. The oil light didn't come on though while the engine was running prior to me turning it off

A mystery where it came out from, will be interested to hear what you find mate.

Tony.

Ok, stupid thought this. Could a blocked CCV pipe have built up pressure and blown itself off and the resultant pressure release was the oil you witnessed ? Maybe the connected the engine hoses back up at BMW and thought we had better not try and get this going. It's not worth the cost ?

I take it no water in the oil ? Fudge on the cap ?

Good luck finding the fault and I hope it's an easy fix for you too.
