Euro cruise disaster

Bad news guys ..... BMW in Brugge told us today via RAC that my car is dead and cannot be repaired.

But I'm not accepting that. They most likely hooked it up to a laptop and just read the codes.

The engine still turns over on the key. I stopped and turned the engine off as soon as it was evident something was wrong. The oil light did not come on so oil was still circulating when I stopped. The oil was coming from behind the inlet manifold which points to the CVV.

They said it could be 3 weeks before they ship my car back to UK so they are giving me another hire car to come home in.

I'm currently in Brugge tonight and heading to Calais tomorrow to pick up a different hire car.

I'm going to get the old girl back up and running. Hopefully it will be an easy fix, but need to get her home so I can have a proper look myself.

Worst case scenario is a replacement engine. I'm sure me and my boy can sort it between us.

Will update again over the weekend.
I am here this weekend, and the BMW st...ehrm...dealer is probably Coquyt. If you are still around hit me up and we can see if we can bring it somewhere where they care about saving an old lady.

Sorry for the whole story but I'm sure the Zed will be an easy repair! Finger crossed!

The RAC recovery service promise to get you and the car to your home if they cant repair it. It's a bit more than a normal roadside repair so I can understand their stance.

That's been a godsend you took out that cover.

This thread has taught me a valuable lesson, I'll be taking the same from now on if I go abroad.

I'm hoping its not a gonna but there isn't anything that can be done that cant wait till I get it home. The RAC haven't told me which BMW dealer my car it at, other than it's in Brugge.
It's a 20yr old car and BMW probably think it's beyond economical repair. They'll probably charge 80-100 euros per hour plus parts so it will most likely cost best part of £1000 for them to repair it to their standards.

Looks like the old Mercs respray fund will be spent mending the zed and paying towards the bills I've run up this week =))

Stiff upper lip right there. Good man.

Just got home in Cornwall. Got in about an hour ago. RAC gave us a new Qashi to drive home in, courtesy of Hertz in Calais. My car will come home in a couple of weeks or so, or as soon as they've got enough cars to fill a transporter.

Glad your both home safe and sound

Nearly all good news then Garry. Your home which I'm sure is a relief and the car will be fine with the RAC.

The RAC services are not cheap, but, when you need them they do everything they say they will in my experience.

We're with the rac although pretty sure it doesn't cover the zed abroad due to age. Certainly look at upping the cover if we do the euro next year.

We've got "Euro assistance" as part of an upgrade package we got through Barklays bank. Our RAC membership is fully comprehensive and comes as a perk of having a certain type of bank account. I think it costs us around £15 a month but it also includes travel insurance, mobile phone insurance and some other bits that I can't recall at the moment.
As for the age of the car, I had to pay 100 euros to RAC via card over the phone because of the age of the car, so the age of the car is just a minor inconvenience that's easily sorted.

Great you got home - provides time to sit back relax and decide your next move when the car gets back too! Hope all works out and the Zed fix is an easy one with minimal expense!!:)

Thats some bad luck you've been experiencing.

I know from experience, especially when travelling abroad that a good car/travel insurance will pay off someday.
Especially when you're in a country like france/spain/italy where no one speaks properly english you can phone someone that can get you a local towing company.

Hi, what a nightmare, the only consultation is no one was hurt. Certainly shows the benefit of having decent accident/breakdown insurance. A point worth noting is most Uk fully comp insurance only covers you third party over here so it's always advisable to check with your insurance company that you are covered fully comp.
let's hope you get to drive it home...good luck.

I just used to get extra holiday cover from the ANWB (Dutch AA/RAC) when driving to the UK.
Just covered the holiday, did not have to pay it all year round.

Really pleased to hear you're both back home safe and sound Gary. We were following your progress with updates from Sarah. Bad news about the Zed but once you get her back home it may not be as bad as they say.;)

Just had a text from RAC Europe to say that the repatriation of my car has started. They have promised me regular updates.

Can't fault the service we're having
