Euro cruise disaster

so sorry to here that Gary, things must seem bleak at the moment but at least you are'nt hurt and the cars can be repaired.wishing you both all the best.

sorry to hear of your bad fortune with the breakdown of the zed... you could not predict that, could have happened to anyone, that european assistance is a must then..... so good they can possibly fix the car for you and you can drive it home... i never seem to have much luck with breakdown services in the past...hope you both get home safely....

Bad news guys ..... BMW in Brugge told us today via RAC that my car is dead and cannot be repaired.

But I'm not accepting that. They most likely hooked it up to a laptop and just read the codes.

The engine still turns over on the key. I stopped and turned the engine off as soon as it was evident something was wrong. The oil light did not come on so oil was still circulating when I stopped. The oil was coming from behind the inlet manifold which points to the CVV.

They said it could be 3 weeks before they ship my car back to UK so they are giving me another hire car to come home in.

I'm currently in Brugge tonight and heading to Calais tomorrow to pick up a different hire car.

I'm going to get the old girl back up and running. Hopefully it will be an easy fix, but need to get her home so I can have a proper look myself.

Worst case scenario is a replacement engine. I'm sure me and my boy can sort it between us.

Will update again over the weekend.

Get the car home and then you can do what needs doing mate. Safe journey home.

Tony.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune Gary @Jack Ratt, but glad to hear that you are both safe. David and Andrea x

Good on ya Gary. I'm sure your Zed will soon be back on the road once you get her home

Really pished off that you are stuck down there as I can't be of help with using my contacts up here.
@Gundun, you are living on the doorstep, can you go and have a look?

Cheers Mike, yeah it was a good night. Your mate is a great bloke too, we're really glad we met up with you guys and Hugh and Sarah @miller1098 . It was a great ending to a sh*** day.

No need to bother @Gundun but thanks for the kind thoughts.

We'll be back in the UK tomorrow and should be home in Truro before night fall depending what time I can get the hire car details to rearrange or to book another tunnel journey.

Sorry you've had such crappy luck on this trip Garry. Only just caught this thread. Your Z will be back and sorted soon I hope. Have a safe trip back, all the best.

What, has the Z totally had it then?

I'm hoping its not a gonna but there isn't anything that can be done that cant wait till I get it home. The RAC haven't told me which BMW dealer my car it at, other than it's in Brugge.
It's a 20yr old car and BMW probably think it's beyond economical repair. They'll probably charge 80-100 euros per hour plus parts so it will most likely cost best part of £1000 for them to repair it to their standards.
The RAC recovery service promise to get you and the car to your home if they cant repair it. It's a bit more than a normal roadside repair so I can understand their stance.

Looks like the old Mercs respray fund will be spent mending the zed and paying towards the bills I've run up this week =))

Hope BMW is wrong and you can get the car home to have a close look at it yourself Garry! Please keep us posted and safe trip home!! JIM

You're holding up well under the circumstances. The financial pain will pass over time. A bit of hassle for a short time until the car is home - then relax and take the rest in your stride. How many miles are on the car?

As you say Garry, if they can't fix it with a laptop they're stuffed, plus it's ancient technology for the kids working on it. Would have been better going to an independent but guess protocol prevents RAC taking it there. It'll be a fixer, no probs.

I agree that BMW probably thought it was not worth checking further to find the full extent of the damage. Lets hope when you get it home things are not as bad as BMW make out

What a nightmare! Let's hope you can get it sorted when back home, but the main thing is that you are both OK.
