yep John we already went down that route and have been told we are to do 3.5 hours.........leave site at 12.30.....but the grudge comes as some of the jobs can be 2 hours drive home on a bank holiday or worse...so the lads are getting back mid afternoon.......how can that be half day?
we have to accept that in real terms we have just lost our bank holidays............
this is just one of many cuts that they have made and it seems that its always the engineers that take the brunt of it...
this is a wealthy company who made millions in the first quarter profit.......but they still penny pinch.
if my theory is right i don't think they are trying to save money as such.....i think they are trying to make the estate/ engineering force...look better than it is....ready to sell us on ;)
Ah I did not realise is was based at different locations so the isue makes more sense now.

I think Boards comments are logical. This is one instance when a union would be useful but I assume you don't have one (can't believe I said that lol) and another example of how useless ACAS are.

Unfortunately in this climate large companies can take advantage and often do of people just being grateful of keeping a job which allows them to get away with a lot more than normal in a growing market.

Unless specified in your contract this is probably a case of custom and practice ie if travel time was allowed in the working day previously then it should be now.

If not (which I assume is the case) it is more of a grey area but you would probably have a case for change of conditions which you should be compensated for (eg overtime for travel). The problem is the word probably and this is why a union representing you as a group would be the ideal otherwise there is a financial risk taking it to an employment tribunal (a solicitor would love this one as its a win win for them !)

You have to give it to whichever bright spark came up with this one though ;-)

Edit: just seen your later post which crossed mine ie that you get paid overtime for the travel. I think they are being reasonable to be honest.

Surely if it's a public holiday then the afternoon is your own time and cannot therefore be used as lieu time?

there is a fallacy in the logic :)

if you are being asked to work the morning (and therefore not the afternoon) you already have the afternoon off...
they can't then say that is your time off in lieu for the morning or they are double counting...

so if you have:
M / T / W / T / F working
now M is a bank holiday - your time
they can ask you to work bank holiday for time in lieu...
so they are asking you to work M am - you need a half day somewhere else in lieu - T / W / T / F afternoons are all possible - but it can't logically be M pm as you are not working it...
i.e. in that week you should have one day off - they are letting you have 1/2 day off, so the other half (M am) has to be in lieu elsewhere...

nothing to do with contracts - just logic :)

they can be made to work the BH but only in swap for a day off...
they are being made to work 1/2 day - so need a half day off in lieu - that can't be the PM as they are not being made to work it... :) if they were (and therefore it was available to be in lieu then they would be starting from a position of working for a whole day and would be entitled to two half days off (one for am and one for pm) - they are being told to take one in the pm - so there is still one to take later...

however you work it out - if the contract says that they can be made to work BH in swap for a day in lieu then being asked to work a 1/2 day means they need a 1/2 day in lieu elsewhere

Great effort to get this role. Know the SME and Senior Engineers are constantly being challenged by the organisation so getting such a position speaks volumes about your skills and professionalism.

Excellent result.

Regards
so iv now made Senior Engineer....... ;)
