I’m sure Lee will be installing a remote control speed limiter
Mmmm he just messaged me about mysterious speedo problem....should have seen this coming =))

Thankfully we in lockdown otherwise I’d have to be worrying @spurs fan in a coupe as well adding ballast or stripping off vital parts...mmm better check his eBay listings just in case...we take our Z3 parade laps seriously.

Only a little update tonight. It’s been a day of collecting powder coated items and lots of de rusting.

I’m amazed in less than 24/h they’ve done all the coating. So today we de rusted the chassis and sealed everything in.

and some other shots after the flappy wheel treatment. All still very solid.

then a treatment of under seal.

All the main areas covered.

while under the car I noticed the reason why the Speedo kept intermittently cutting out in the wet. So tomorrow I’ll solder and heat shrink a fix.

Another really pants job was removing two snapped bolts. Both swing arms were on a car that left the road and snapped off both shock bolts. If I had a pound for every bolt I’ve drilled out in the last few weeks. Nice M12x1.5 to drill.

took me a good hour to fix this.

no pressure as this could write the arm off...
View attachment 170563
only one more to do tomorrow :)

We also collected the springs for Althulas and these look amazing. Really pleased how red powder coat came out also the cost was £30 for all four springs, think we might start doing more colours. Dino we could try a pink subframe =))

Those bloody inner sills, I don't think people realise what's lurking underneath the outers :woot: bet there was no signs on the outer ones either ?

Well impressed yet again at the work carried out, well done. (Both of you)
Great spot too on the wiring Lee.
All this just in time for this lovely car. Our weather defo takes it's toll on the underside of our cars. Enough to make us worried, no doubt.

Roy.

PS; coupe still looks OK underneath as I checked when had it in the air, but you can't see the places where it might not be.

Little update today.

We collected the huge BMW order of nuts n bolts, one of the biggest orders they’ve seen I’m told.
404832CC-F072-4E16-98A3-E2AED45A2DC1.jpeg

Now we had all the bolts ready we could make a start getting the front assembled. This then allows us to remove the gearbox. Front subframe and roll bar looking really smart after powder coat.
15C4A220-1070-4083-8DB8-4CC744D9A3B3.jpeg

Also had to transfer over the poly bushes to the new wishbones. Shame to cut off the new OE lollipops.
FBA67B18-04FF-4344-B496-C2B2529D74F9.jpeg

Poly bush.
E4C87953-6F4D-4C4E-BCD1-91ED7E6FA9A1.jpeg

Now ready to start building the front end. Subframe back on with new bolts, along with wishbone and tie rod.
96AC973C-D619-4B30-BAD7-11D61EBD78DE.jpeg

now with roll bar and new caps along with drop links.

E76FA4AB-64B2-44FD-ABFF-7F62FEDA2099.jpeg

then to add shocks and hubs.
9E26406D-C8D6-4865-A3FA-2C624033DD25.jpeg

I noticed at this stage the camber setup was a little odd and the top mounts back to front so I’ve reset everything and dialled the camber to the max setting. All the tracking needs doing once she’s finished so this will be checked then.
EA615A9C-13B9-4099-9A6E-6F6349E41B45.jpeg

I then finished off drilling out snapped bolts. Needed to get this time consuming job out the way.
7D711A26-5139-4652-9719-518A7EF74BF3.jpeg

also the new front 300mm brake kit arrived so we striped and painted everything. Not sure how long these will last but Dino is looking for a front Big brake kit ‘BBK’ to go up front.

7F960F21-B2C5-4A4B-8700-929708B8AD32.jpeg

Also started putting bushes back in powder coated items. Beam getting its poly bushes back.

7F6EFBFF-53A4-473B-815A-A1C2D82AC00A.jpeg

slightly annoying the new half shafts arrived, we always check items when they arrive. The hub fits fine but the OE bolts don’t fit. Waiting to hear back why.

9B4D8201-1C6A-4514-BFFE-41C67AFD91A6.jpeg

Hub fits lovely on the spline.
F4382751-3AFF-41BF-8D6B-6FFE841FC950.jpeg

Next up gearbox removal and rear subframe assembly.

I recognise a fair few parts on that car, stoked to see this car getting some tlc, when this crazy time is over we really must get a track day together @Lee @Dino D
Totally agree mate, we squeezed a track day in last year, me Dino and Spurs. I actually enjoyed it more with friends. Was really interesting following each other’s lines and taking it in turns to lead.

Apologies, yes @spurs fan in a coupe too. Love the social part of these days, boys and girls talking a lot about cars and s***....

I blame it on you lot @spurs fan in a coupe @Lee @Brian H for influencing me down track days!
It’s much more fun with good company so definitely we must get something done. I fancy a proper full day somewhere like Cadwell or Snetterton

just need to get proper brakes that can keep up now the rest of its all solid:coolsteer)

This car turned 23 yrs old this month and it’s 10yrs in my ownership this year. 137k miles in all weathers of which I’ve done about 50k. Lived outside until last year as well.

not bad going all considered!

Really interested to see how much clutch is left- it’s still on the original one
(but I’ve lost count of how many sets of tyres and brakes its had over the years!)

You mean you have moved from motor cross to actual track (black stuff) lol.
That Z3 is going to be a very well sorted car @Dino D

Nice big juicy update:

Front end is 90% there looking fresh.
B627E730-65DE-4B7B-83AD-FA8B80F6ADB6.jpeg

attached the hubs.
D6FD8D45-0B43-412F-840F-647A50F8CAFF.jpeg

D6A79834-543F-4E46-A234-5984A7080F3D.jpeg

then all the finishing touches. Air ducts re fitted.

CBF1984B-A1B9-497A-BAF7-0D6A65650A56.jpeg

We then got a call from the company rebuilding the diff. They said the diff itself is fine but the LSD unit ‘the carrier’ has too much wear inside resulting in lateral movement, this is causing the clunk in the rear of the car. Are only options are to source a new unit and transfer over the crown gear
D5312FC0-1439-45A6-AF6F-F0324316C3FF.jpeg

The next big job was to remove the gearbox. This is where the fun begins because we want to test fit the 6 speed box and see where we are with various brackets we’ve bought. First photo showing the old clutch assembly, it was clear it’s never been off and it’s original.
5217A062-89C5-4D33-8984-F8E52FC7F83A.jpeg

Assembly removed.
A2C98C62-8829-475F-94BC-AB030E3CF5A9.jpeg

here we can see some heavy use with the heat spots.
895C9797-FB17-4023-82CC-FD7AE81E60B5.jpeg

And a falling apart clutch disc
8770B2FF-CE6F-454E-B357-9E07485E7658.jpeg

now looking empty engine side.
FE75A3A9-A100-4113-A90A-BF7C9C298A80.jpeg

Now the box is off we can do a mock up of what length the 6 speed needs to meet.
CAB9B962-2F62-44F5-B96D-A94745322EBB.jpeg

two key measurements, bell housing to the end of the prop and bell housing to the linkage centre.
955C9ADF-0FCB-43E7-974C-1D40C97FF7BE.jpeg

Then once we do the same process with the 6 speed we can subtract the measurements.
C4623573-7C5A-41AA-9B6A-20BEE4460193.jpeg

and once we do the calculations it’s clear the prop shaft needs a reduction of 100mm and the linkage 29mm to meet the centre. That’s the easy bit done we have a company standing by if we proceed down this road.

This is where it gets complicated. The 6 speed gearbox fitted fine with plenty of room in the tunnel. The bracket I was advised to buy also lined up with the second set of holes but the issue we now have is the gearbox is 30mm too high, the gearbox needs to be dead level because the front section of the prop shaft is fixed straight to the centre bearing and excess angle would result in failing bearings or Guibo bush.

here you can see that 30mm gap between the bracket and car.
F4D2EF7A-D615-4205-8689-F18700D8C52C.jpeg

So next we removed those 30mm bushes but as you can see we can’t run a no bush fitment it will vibrate the car like crazy and potentially rip itself off the car.
EF0C8167-9875-4BC2-AD23-4036C4E2EC0D.jpeg

So for now it’s back to the drawing board with a bolt in option. Normally I would call in a favour and get someone over to fab a bracket but this lockdown makes that impossible. If we can’t find a solution in the next few days I’ll go back to the 5 speed and revisit this bracket later.

Second part of today we decided to do some of the smaller jobs to get us ahead while we wait for gearbox and diff decisions.

Fitting new swing arm bushes.
AC479007-6D05-4348-868B-D9C49BA14BEC.jpeg

nice easy job this must of taken 10mins for all 4.
9B41BA9E-FE2B-4295-9A91-820856D9B965.jpeg

then assemble the rest of the swing arms. First up the bearings.
FCCA1838-CF82-43D4-9395-7E986A9D20B7.jpeg

dust shields and handbrake guide
828E8225-8C9E-4C34-B132-237C81C8AC1A.jpeg

Followed by handbrake shoes and discs going back on.

96993C21-2B51-4DEB-BC4C-220DFC09579C.jpeg

this is where it gets annoying. We sourced another new pair of drive shafts. The first set bolts wouldn’t fit. And this other set from Euros also didn’t fit. The ABS ring was in the wrong position. So back they go, the hunt goes on.
0D6F2EEB-5D84-4CF9-89CB-5B31BA638BE9.jpeg

Last little job today was to remove a gearbox web to allow the fitment of the S50 manifolds Dino has fitted. The 5 speed had this notch so we’ll need to do the same on the 6.

So nice to see non crusty parts going back in:cool:

Re the clutch, it’s only done 137k ‘hairdresser’ miles, should we take it back to BMW and see if they’ll make a contribution under goodwill for it wearing out so quickly =))
