Personally having driven both types in various forms the Z3 is more fun, it's the retro feel of the handling. The Z4 is a very composed car and the handling brilliant. Performance wise they will be on par with each other 2.8 / 3.0 just the handling will out match the other.

With the right stance, wheels, bolt ons the Z3 looks better in my opinion. Not including M's :D

Personally I would spend the money on the Z3. You can also take the mods up a level and get more power out the engine. I can no keep with an M well into 3rd gear :)

Although Lee is a very bad influence on the modding ideas front  he is 100% correct

I’ve decided a while back the Z3 is a proper keeper. Having been for a test drive in a new M4 (passenger) and driven newer BMWs with electric PAS and no LSD i feel that the driving experience is just less (however as a car they are better at being a ‘car’ but I’m looking for a roadster).

I would take a Z4M though as it has LSD and hydraulic steering. However that is a whole other level of money to buy and run!

For what the Z3 owes most of us vs. what it gives in fun and reliability, it’s a hard combo to beat.

A respray is always ‘nice to have’ but unless the paint is truly terrible it’s not essential, from the pics you’d never know it needs paint.

If your priorities are changing then I’d suggest keeping the 3 and dealing with the priorities first and enjoy a car that owes you very little. If you need a more practical car than get one - making one car do multiple roles well is difficult, there’s alway a compromise.

Seeing how like to get your car ‘just so’ I can’t help but think you’ll spend a fortune on a Z4 to get it there (and unless you get an M you’ll still have EPAS and no LSD, not mention the chicken bum* to look at :bag::whistle:)

*a phrase coined and © by Hardtop I believe :)

No it looks great on pictures, but has rust on both rear arches, front wings and sills. Common rust around bootlid pull and of course the front bumper where someone hit it. Only decent panel is the rear bumper, doors are ok but not perfect. So all 4 wings, sills and front bumper need doing which means doors are better being painted at the same time. That doesn't leave many panels so I may as well have the whole lot done, no problems with colour changes then across the panels and it's nice and fresh. And I also dented the rear strip last week that goes between the hood and bootlid :banghead: damn snowfoam lance burst off the gun and dented it, could have hit the wing but no!

As you say that it the only thing that holds me back with buying a Z4, it will be great but I won't stop spending on mods much like I have done with the Z3. It would be used over winter so then I'd also have to factor in the cost of a hardtop which are not as easy to pick up as they are for the Z3. I already have everything like that for the Z3, heated ///M seats, hardtop, winter wheels etc. I'd need this all over again with a Z4. The chicken bum is the best part of the Z4 :D As much as I keep looking at them I think it just going to be a bit more cost effective keeping the 3 and waiting for the prices to drop right down on the 4's. But if I spend the money on the 3 it will be a keeper I think for many years to come now I've rekindled the love for it infact I will probably never sell it.

Jeez sounds a bit of a nail when you put it like that, seeing as though I’ve found myself collecting Z3 how about I take it of your hands, £1,500 cash money collected :whistle:

Yeah, it's a bit of a Marmite thing, a bit like the real ales that I drink. I don't like hoppy beers, I don't like Z4s, it's all a matter of personal taste.... :beer:beer, :coolsteer):coolsteer)but not of course mixed at the same time.....
