Dead Gearbox

So what has actually given way ?

Clutch or sommat between 3-4 but wear throughout also the pump that pumps the oil round wernt workin properly etc tbh driving to em it had gone worse jumping between gears
Had the oil n filter changed 15000mks ago and it came out black n sh$tty.but the diff oil was fairly clean.

Never given any thought to how auto boxes work other than knowing there is a torque converter in there somewhere.

Just tried to understand how they do their stuff. Conclusion is :- Fiendishly complicated things.

I can just about get the basics of one set of planetary gears, but then - How on earth did engineers work out how to add a 2nd planetary gear set and then a 3rd set or even more for 9 speed boxes and make it all work with all those pressure plates and gubbins. Working out what is going in which direction and speed and what to lock to make it happen is impossible - surely. It all looks like witchcraft and wizardry to me.
I can understand when someone looks at your pile of gears and decides its broken without opening it up - the chances of most of use ever getting all the bits back inside in the right order is pretty much zero.

No wonder they cost more than most engines to replace

Yes I went to look when they rebuilt my sons CooperS box, but I left more puzzled than when I started.

Lot of money Moz but you love your car and it gives you hours of enjoyment so its worth it mate.

It's a hard decision to make replacing such an expensive item or choose to move on but as others have said better the devil you know and after all the other work you have done you know your going to have a well sorted car for a hopefully long time to enjoy. It's a shame the timing is very inconvenient but st least you can have some reassurance from now on. I had to make the a expensive decision with my ///M on weather to rebuild the engine or break it and move on only problem with attachments with some things but it's these little things that bring so much enjoyment priceless.

Spot on Mark:thumbsup:

Tony.

Hi Moz, thought I saw on your holiday thread you had problems with the rebuilt box and had to leave the car behind when you went on hols. I hope it's all sorted now for you. What went wrong?

Mike

After the initial failure had the gearbox rebuilt in huddersfield however after a couple of days revs wernt consistant with gear changes autobox.so back in. diagnosed faulty new torque converter whitch was replaced all seemed well. drove to billz on fri night all ok.Sat morn started up clunk clunk so drove home in limp mode switched cars an off we set.to europe.zed ended up trailered away back to repairers and after lots of gearbox in out in out. a broken wire and a leak in the casing not holding pressure etc so new casing and innards .tbh i felt sorry for them as well as miself. they have tried to resolve it. an not fkd me off as some places would
So far all gud .they done a few miles testing and ive give it some had a blast round wales yesterday and touch wood all gud.
Hope this is the end of the saga.
M

Hope that is the end of your gearbox problems mate.

Tony.

Fingers crossed Moz.

Nice to know they honour there work and not fob people off ...Glad it's resolved

Really hope it's sorted for good.

I was on the verge of getting the fluid changed but not so sure now. Conflicting stories on if it's best to leave gunk in there than remove it and find plate coatings worked better with sludge.
