@FRANKIE all done now. I did it a slightly different way but got the same results.
I removed the old slave from the bell housing and disconnected the hose that carries the fluid from the old slave.
Then pushed the clutch pedal to ensure that fluid was coming out of the hose at a steady rate.
After this I quickly connected the new slave to the hose.
Then pressed the push rod against something solid (in my case the transmission). Opened the Bleed screw whilst pressing the push rod in. Did this a few times, connected the slave back up to the bell housing. After a lot of swearing I managed to push the slave back into the bell housing, got both nuts on and bingo!
A few pumps of the pedal quickly tightened the pedal up and the clutch feels just right now.
