problem with this kind of thing is all the tiny almost insignificant parts like obscure trim and badges, even finding the right grills would be real hard unless you have them made, suppose this is part of the fun, searching for that elusive part.

Yeah, Tony works there for the main dude, and flogs all the parts that they strip off, if the owners hand them over complete. Got a message today that all the new attachment points are fitted and body fit starts Monday.

This is when I waved goodbye;

You are right, having them made, plus a four tailpipe exhaust in stainless, a new hood in beige with a different shaped back window and the wire wheels of course. The biggest question is whether I should badge it or not....opinions?

i see no reason not to, there again the majority wont know what the original looked like anyway, if un-badged it would keep the casual on looker guessing. a quick question, what are you doing about a steering wheel and interior trim?

Another mini z related adventure for us today in the form of a quick trip up to Worcestshire and back for some Montreal blue panels. Met two great Zeddera today, @Sir Percival and his Mrs and @Low Rider
Love how through this forum we get to make new friends.

Had to be quite brief with the stops in Redditch today but have to say some of the A roads I found myself on around that way are awesome for Zedding. Lovely part of the country with even lovelier people, me thinks a Worcestershire cruise is needed :)

Can't wait to see your Z with its new body @Sir Percival - you really shouldn't post pics of the old girl undressed like that!

I say no prancing horse badges. But a jumping cow in BMW colors might be cool (or whatever the main animal of Bavaria/Munich is). A bit like this prancing moose I see on fast Volvos. Subtle but fun:

from a re-sale point of view it would need its badges if not just on the grill.

oh yeh, just remembered who i was discussing z3 kits with. he would also be interested in this thread.

Steering wheel; probably a Nardi classic, like the original, although I also like the Motolita Mk5, mostly because it has T shaped spokes whereas the Nardi has Y shaped. (both can be wood rimmed with polished slotted spokes and a horn button....disabling the airbag light is not a problem)

Choice will depend on whether I change the dash or not....probably will, but not for a while....I will be changing the seats and door cards first. The problem with a retro dash is....its retro....and therefore things like air vents disappear, plus there is no room for a radio, you have to loose the steering lock and move the ignition switch over to the push-button, plus there was no centre console, so you have to try and find spaces for all the switches, heater controls etc. which usually means hiding them somehow....or otherwise accepting the loss of a lot of the creature comforts...decisions, decisions :nailbiting:

Im still a bit confused with how this is done, i would have thought if the car was fitted with say an airbag, how do you get around the MOT, what will it say on the log book, if its just a re body then does it not stay as a Z3? or is it a case like t tony said that if the origin of the car is unknown then how does the tester know what should be fitted. i had thought about doing a build like this my self but little problems like these have always put me off. Hopefully you have answers to these questions and i can re-think my next car.

i do know someone who brought a kit car, built a new one and swapped the identity from the wreck he had brought, no IVA test, not technically legal but it does show holes in the whole system.

if there is no airbag there to test it cant be tested .... therefore no problem.

it will still be registered as a z3 iirc

Sharpy is right...if it has one it has to be serviceable....if there isn't one (as long as the light is not on) it doesn't matter on MOT.

It can also be re-registered under a different name if the re-body is drastic enough, and you can supply sufficient evidence in the form of receipts etc....I'm not saying its easy, there are quite a few hoops to jump through, but it follows a logical pattern....just a bit procedural...which is fair enough. One of my mates has just re-registered his as a "DNA 2fifty"....after about four or five too and froes with DVLA. Not sure I would bother....after all it is what it is, changing the name doesn't make it anything other than a replica.

One other thing I would say on the safety front; the kit has new bumpers and an extension to both the front and back body. However these extensions pick up on, and even use the same mounting bolts as, the original bumpers and are made primarily of box section. I am quite happy that all standard crash zone features will still work as advertised, in fact it is probable that they have been enhanced by this reinforcement (as they will begin to absorb impact both earlier, and further, from the occupants)
