Nicely done Tony, I hope you get an answer to those problems! JIM
Great write up Tony and great improvisation. So, here goes, the new set of hoses,

Got the car jacked up and front wheels off ready to fit the hoses, instructions say to check they're the correct length and fittings before removing the old hoses. ONE glaring omission which I will add,
View attachment 45594
Before you do anything make sure you can open the bleed screw or you could be up s*** creek without a paddle.
Anyway having laid the new hose alongside the old one it was the same length and had the same unions so having put the pedal bar in place I released the pressure from the bleed screw and set about removing the old hose.
View attachment 45590 View attachment 45591 View attachment 45593
Having screwed the union into the calliper and tightened it I placed the rubber support in it's mount on the strut body. When I push the union into the hole in the bracket on the inner wing, to my dismay it went straight through the hole as shown.

b*****! What to do now, I found a packet of zinc plated flat washers in a drawer, so using a stepped drill bit I opened them out to allow the union to be a snug fit. (I made 5 more of these for the other hoses - more on that later).

Anyway this allowed me to continue fitting the front hoses and when done they looked like this, I also had the reshape the securing clips from the male brake pipe unions to keep the joint mounted securely.

The old hoses on their way to the bin.

Both front brakes bled up, checked for leaks and wheels re-fitted. Car turned round, now for the 4 rear hoses, yeah .........................
The rear end has a flexible hose from the body to the rear suspension arm, and a short steel brake pipe which connects to a short hose from the calliper, but unlike the Z3, the Z4's steel link pipe is not separate and is crimped to the hose from the body to the suspension arm as a single item.

This steel section connects to the hose from the calliper at a bracket below the driveshaft, hard to picture this but here's a couple of pictures to try.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that you join both these rear hoses at the mounting point beneath the driveshaft and it would look like below.

I don't want to do this until I have contacted the seller and although I am pleased with the quality of these parts I'm more than a little disappointed that nowhere in the instructions does it mention any of this let alone the problem mounting the front hoses on the wings. It clearly states on the package that this set is for my car, so it should fit. Strangely they also include in the kit a small plastic bag containing 2 copper washers for a "Banjo" type fitting, but there are none on my car?
Tony.
ps. On the UP side having been out for a ride with just the front hoses changed there is a definite improvement in the firmness of the brake pedal so I'm very much looking forward to getting the rear ones fitted now.
They are available in a large range of colours too Steve, I can certainly feel an improvement just with the fronts, mind you that's where most of the braking is done after all. Dead easy job took me about an hour and that included ferking around with those washers too. The rear ones will be reasonably easy too, I just want to know if that is what you're supposed to do and if it is they should bloody well tell you. I could've got it finished today then.Great write up Tony and great improvisation.
Seems worth a bit of agro for improvement in braking performance, they look very trick too .
Steve
Your not old mate just matureI mainly suffer that in the evenings Garry, gets harder to motivate myself after tea as I get older to be honest.
Tony.
Ouch!T WAT.
Tony.
Yes you would think there would be some guidance included in the pack with some pictures to help. They are available in a large range of colours too Steve, I can certainly feel an improvement just with the fronts, mind you that's where most of the braking is done after all. Dead easy job took me about an hour and that included ferking around with those washers too. Top job mate and even more inginuity, worth doing if it's improved an already good breaking performance.Last weekend I sent an email to the supplier of my braided hoses and duly got a reply on Monday.
I am sorry there was these issues with your hoses.
We do a different female fitting for some of the other BMW models and that would have been better suited, so I will have the specs changed.
I got the specs for this vehicle from HEL performance, so tomorrow I will speck to them to why they choose that rear setup.
We don't make replacement hard-lines so I can only imagine the specs where designed to remove the hard line between the 2 hoses and to reuse the existing bracket.
I am more then happy to send you some replacements with the different fittings should your wish? I would just need to find out more about these rear specs first.
I apologise for the inconvenience this has caused you.
Regards,
Liam
For someone with a British sounding name he does seem to have a problem with the language (or keyboards), anyway a pleasant enough reply so I told him I would persevere and then send him pictures of the hoses fitted and what I needed to do to make them fit.
I also told him that more info was needed in the information leaflet to clarify that this kit deletes the short steel pipe between the 2 rear hoses.
Below is the old set up next to the new 2 hose arrangement.

Apart from the large washers required as were also on the fronts, the only other problem was the male union at the centre joint was too long to keep any pressure on the mounting bridge at the joint. It would have been loose at the bracket (hope that makes sense)
So what I did was make two "nuts" to screw onto the male unions and tighten up to the union head as below.
View attachment 45870 View attachment 45867
I made these nuts by getting a joining union and placing a male union in each end to keep the shape when tightened in the vice, this also preserves the thread too, I cut two pieces off and fitted to hose union as shown.

After placing the pedal bar on the brake pedal (this moves the piston in the Master Cylinder and prevents fluid running into the cylinder and eventually out of the system when you disconnect a pipe or hose).
View attachment 45874
With this in place you can remove a pipe, hose, bleed screw, whatever, and all you will lose is a tiny amount of fluid due to the pressure in the system but nothing after that.
After fitting the new hose set up I removed the pedal bar and bled the system on the O/S/R and checked for leaks under pressure.

Where the old Flexible hose was anchored to the rear suspension arm at the joint of the steel pipe I cut some rubber hose and packed it around the new hose to allow it to be clamped back in place. See the first of these 4 pictures.

Wheels on (130NM) and a short road test out in the foggy evening gloom. Brake pedal so firm now, looking forwards to the next part of the upgrades probably just after Christmas if Shirl gets all the hints!
Tony.
ps. If you have any questions please ask.
Oooo exciting stuff,be nice to see how good a cars brakes are when properly done .You can try it next Saturday mate and see what you think.
Tony.
Hi Brian, he did say that there was an alternative union but unless he gets feedback he won't know to do anything about the problems. Hopefully I'm giving him a heads up on how to improve his items. The general quality of the hoses does feel good I have to say so it didn't really take me much longer than it should. I did both the rears in 1 1/4 hrs this afternoon (inc. tea break)Watching with interest @t-tony its on my to do list, re the washers, I remember doing this on my Z3, seems aftermarket unions just aren't big enough.
Cheers for that mate, this is the type of work I enjoy Andy, finding a way round a problem and making things generally. Modern day car electronics bore me to death. No interest in that side of my job at all.Top effort Tony, clearly a man who knows what he is doing.
Nothing like a decent set of brakes to give you confidence
