I've got to change the front discs and pads soon and looking at the calipers they are all rusty. I was thinking of painting them all black whilst I have them apart, thoughts anyone.

I'am also interested in what people have used as mine are just big rusty lumps

A good wire brushing and a coat of Smooth Hammerite is as good as anything. ;)

I don't think that normal Hammerite will take the heat. I used Halford's Brake Caliper Paint.

If you can, remove the caliper to paint it. At the very least take the pads out, unbolt the carrier (#2) and remove the rubber bushes (#12).

I'd also suggest that you paint the pads the same colour as it looks really strange having pads that are a different colour.

Unless you intend tracking your car and expect to overcook your brakes from time to time then Hammerite smooth is the way to go. I have also seen calipers painted with a mix of gold and silver hammerite which gives the same finish they came out of the factory with.

mine have been painted with Hammerite for over 12 month and still look ok

I used engine enamel on the calipers but only because it was already in my garage.
For the hub part of the discs I have used both silver and black smooth rite without any problem.
The best effect though if you can lay the car up for a few days is powder coating.
I think Shantybeater did this and someone else but I can't just recall who.

Thanks everybody for your replies and as si-forks says they look rusty blobs, so I will go the hammerite route when I change the discs and pads.

Like Titan (terry) i also use Engine Enamal. With a couple of coats the crap then just wipes off.
