Banned for mobile phone use.

I strongly agree that using a phone while driving is a no-no. But most cars made now have large screens on the dashboard which do all sorts of things, and you aren't stopped from playing with that, even though it must be just as distracting.
We were visiting relatives in Canada a year or two back and the guy was horrified that phones were banned while driving in the UK. He reckoned since driving a car was basically "down time" ie needing no concentration, it was the perfect time to catch up on your calls.
Yep.diffeent cultures mate. We go to the same place in Turkey and always use the same taxi driver who is now a friend. He is always on his phone as he's taking calls for fairs, I moan at him and he's says " all good Dave no problem" till he sees the Jandarma and his phone gets slung in the back seat!

They should confiscate their phones and crush them on the spot in front of them.

Tony.
No - The car would be far more of an incentive....

I disagree Ian. To most people losing their phone would be like having their right hand cut off and to do it in front if them would ram the point home. How many cars does someone like Beckham have? I bet he only has 1 phone though.

Tony.

I know mate but just can't stomach it, was onto a mate of mine earlier about premiership earnings. He's a life long supporter of Mansfield Town and loves football but he won't entertain premiership football due to the ridiculous wages being paid out. As he say, we have 1000's of families in the UK in poverty, countries around the world in famine and with little or no sanitation, little or no hygine yet these over paid morons swan about like the world owes them a favour. I agree with him whole heartedly.
Don't get me wrong mate, footballers at the top end are just not worth the money. They give millions every year to various charities and their fame helps raìse millions more. Beckham played 10 games for PSG and donated his £170k per week to charity and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Poverty in World society is not the fault of the footballer nor can they save it though Didier Drogba had a dam good go. Only we, the masses can change society but then millions wouldn't die, we'd all live longer then we'd be goosed.

Look at Africa for instance, we've been giving for longer than my 53 years mate and guess what, we still are despite there being considerable tapped and untapped wealth on the continent

Give a man a fish ..............

Anyway, bloody lawn bowls players :D

A punishment needs to be a sevete inconvenience or it simply doesnt work. To lose one car to a bloke who has say 10, isn't teally an inconvrnience is it?
Like any one else he would be fooked with the loss of his telephone, and after all, it was the reason he got done.

Tony.

OK I was joking, but.....
Phone - £600? Car which they probably don't own because its on a PCP (most are nowadays) - pick a figure. Let's say £16,000 they have to pay back and still not have a car. Or, boss, your car got crushed because I was on the phone. I think that might focus attention. Drastic - yes. Effective - yes.

When you're talking uber rich, then there is no deterrent except public humiliation.

I know I know but the figures are just ridiculous beyond words. It has to change, it's sickening the way these tools demand the sums they do. Give good chunks away or not they are just not worth 10% of it and never will be, how can they earn more than surgeons? People that save lives all day everyday? It just doesn't sit well with me mate.

When I am sat at a set of lights I tend to look around me at other people in their cars particularly ones coming past the other way. The amount of people I see looking down and only giving a glance upwards at the road in front is frightening it’s obvious they are looking at their phones conveniently sat in their lap. The police are running a scheme with the local bus company where I live and placing officers on buses in elevated positions so they can see down into cars which is being quite effective according to local press.
Ok some say haven’t the police got better things to do but for me they can’t do enough of this kind of policing it saves lives and until those who think it is ok realise the dangers then I say good on ‘em.

Have you seen that program on BBC2. Those guys earn their corn. In football, its not so much the payers but the agents that cause this salary situation. Many players in the PL shouldn't get in a league 2 team....

I get a bird's eye view Ian in my job and it's out of control. It will never be sorted, the problem is just far to big.

It's not the value of the phone itself it's the info contained in it and the inconvenience of retrieving said info etc.
I don't agree with crushing cars where they can. Be sold and the money raised spent on better thongs.

Tony.

This is very true Dave, same page mate but it's the agents that do the deals not the footballers. An agent can ear millions from just one deal. Life's not fair mate, never has been and never will be.

Thats true for some I'm sure, but - You can move from one phone to another and be back up and running in 15 minutes and not lose a thing. It isn't a deterrent other than the monetary cost.

People need to read up on the law as even taking a drink at the wheel of a moving car can result in a conviction.
Are you aware that two independent eye witnesses can make a convincing complaint of a speeding vehicle and get it looked at, three or four witnesses would probably get a conviction.
Not sure about grassing him up but may be this “other drivers are watching you” will send a message out to those who would rather spend money on anything else rather than a hands free system if their car doesn’t have one. Using a mobile phone in your hand is as bad as looking at your passenger whilst talking to them, it only takes a split second to miss vital info which may help you to stop running a child over, think how you would feel when getting out your vehicle to see if the poor child was still alive. Your worse nightmare, then they find out you were on your phone. He may be rich and famous but this proves he’s a fool.

RHA,Roy.

The government are missing a trick.

Hundreds of unmarked vans across the UK with a roof rack incorporating cameras.

Yes it would take a lot of manpower to review the footage and send out the nip's but at £200 per offence I'm sure there's a big fat profit for the treasury.

And all in the name of road safety.

Doesn't need the government nor the police imo. Insurers could sort the problem quickly. One incident - a stern warning. A second incident immediately load the insurance by 50% or leave, A third and your insurance is cancelled. Doesn't matter who is driving the car if they are insured to do so.
Many will say that it would only induce more people to drive uninsured, but, with technology, it's an awful lot easier to identify un-insured cars in real time. Get caught and the car is taken off you.

Anybody sticking to the law has nothing to worry about.
If it's not your car but you pay for the insurance, you will soon think twice about letting someone drive it that uses a phone. Simples.

In the end, being able to drive isn't a right, it's a privilege.
