It seems no matter how well off you are you can still be tempted to use your mobile whilst driving your vehicle as apparently David Beckam has. Six month ban seems a bit light as so many accidents have been caused by drivers on their mobile phones. Sorry but no sympathy from me as a fine would not hurt him at all.

Roy.

Most likely he just used it without even thinking about it, as he spends a lot of time in the US.

His solicitor is quoted as saying he had "no recollection of the day in question or this particular incident" - not a one off then.

I had someone (another 3 Series actually) wobble in front of me on the motorway the other day.

As I went past him I looked over and he was on his phone. He saw me looking and probably glimpsing a large white car that might have been the Police dropped his phone onto the floor to hide his misdemeanour. I shook my head in disgust. As soon as he realised it wasn't the Police he stuck his middle finger up and mouthed 'you w*nker'...

I have had a driver try to run me off the road as he took exception to me wagging my finger at him using his phone. He was weaving all over the road and slowing right down and speeding back up he was so distracted.

I'm not convinced the issue is wealth based, it's a cultural issue. It needs a culture change from bottom up (schools) and top down (adults). Perhaps David Beckham and other such influential people could assist in driving (no pun) the issue down by assisting for free in hard hitting television adds and in schools along with the Police, Fire Brigade and Ambulance Service.

I agree Andy . Perhaps, considering his wealth he should be compelled to educate the public.

I think it's more people like him and other 'stars' in the public eye have the ear of their followers. It wouldn't hurt for Beckham and a few others in the spotlight to throw a few schekkles into the pot though.

Ok we should not use mobile devices in the car when driving.

AND yes he did and is being punished for it, this is all fine( he did the crime)

BUT what i do not agree with is that he got convicted because a member of the public seen him a took a number of photographs of him and sent them to the police.
I don't think a member of the public should do this, ( probably a cyclist, after all we know they are all perfect aren't they ) I also think it should be up to the police to catch you.

He certainly has the opportunity now to redeem himself and turn his conviction on its head by teaming up with authorities to educate people on the dangers of driving whilst using a mobile device. It would certainly be a great PR exercise maybe bringing some respect back.

I wonder if the said member of public would/has taken pics of 'ordinary' peeps and shopped them, probably not.

I'm sure that most of those bitching about and flouting the mobile phone when driving law will be the first to complain if one of their own family is hurt or killed by someone doing as they do. It is endemic. Usually the same people who do 40 or more in 30 limits etc. Their view - the law is for everyone except them.... Anyone trying to have the law enforced on them personally is an enemy.

Most cars now have BT handsfree and I'm sure Bentley's have had them for years. With technology nowadays, it's possible (if you must) to receive and make phone calls without touching the phone. There really is no need nor excuse to be using a phone.

Beckham should know better. As a public figure he is always going to be target for others. I'm sure that he will hardly be inconvenienced by his ban. Taking his punishment and doing publicity might just do some public service.

Getting offenders to attend A&E and/or mortuaries to see the results of their behaviour or that of others might have an effect..... Also being personally liable for the consequential costs rather than their insurers.

The government upping the fine to £200 and six points instead of three hasn't worked.

Anyone who spends time on the road will tell you loads of people are still playing with their phones/looking down into their lap.

The chances of getting caught are too low which is why people carry on.

The MET put officers on buses with video cameras catching people, brilliant idea.

The whole thing needs more enforcement, education/advice isn't working.

Zero sympathy from me. Can't abide the money these idiots get paid to play football. He should have got a lot worse, kids look upto him as a role model, what sort of example has he set with this stunt?

They should confiscate their phones and crush them on the spot in front of them.

I strongly agree that using a phone while driving is a no-no. But most cars made now have large screens on the dashboard which do all sorts of things, and you aren't stopped from playing with that, even though it must be just as distracting.
We were visiting relatives in Canada a year or two back and the guy was horrified that phones were banned while driving in the UK. He reckoned since driving a car was basically "down time" ie needing no concentration, it was the perfect time to catch up on your calls.

Whilst the lad has done wrong and should be punished, we can't expect to have his head put in a vice because he's David Beckham, the law doesn't allow for it. Now if a financial fine was proportionate to your earnings as some countries do it would be a fairer system. As for the money in sport, I'd like to see the man or woman that would say 'nah, not for me mate, I'll just take £50 a game'. If the money wasnt there they wouldnt get it. :D

I know mate but just can't stomach it, was onto a mate of mine earlier about premiership earnings. He's a life long supporter of Mansfield Town and loves football but he won't entertain premiership football due to the ridiculous wages being paid out. As he say, we have 1000's of families in the UK in poverty, countries around the world in famine and with little or no sanitation, little or no hygine yet these over paid morons swan about like the world owes them a favour. I agree with him whole heartedly.
