The car was previously used to go to work and back by the previous owner, and it’s been sat for around a year until I bought it more or less, I thought that it may need to be driven hard for a while to get it going again. It had the CCV valve stuff sorted in Feb 2016, so it can’t be that and I can’t spot any obvious air leaks.

Connor.
Most likely nothing wrong with it if you've done all the checks, cars in general prefer to be driven. A good blast down the motorway could may well solve the issue.

As an aside, our TD4 only does the school run and shopping run, when I get home I give it a good thrashing and she drives and picks up 100% better. Slightly different concept accepted but the same applies

To be fair it was a bit better on the way home. Didn’t want to stall after a 70 mph blast at high rpms. I can’t help but think there’s some sort of fault though

Could be mate. Plugs, leads etc. Fuel could've gone stale being sat for so long. Air filter may not have been changed for an age? You got a code reader to see if it throws anything up?

I think you hit the nail on the head Andy, best get the codes read Connor. If you don't have a code reader they're very reasonable price wise and easy to use.
I may suspect camshaft position sensor if it continues most likely the inlet side. Again, easy to change, I did a "How to" for this job.

Thanks for this Tony & Andy.
I never pulled he trigger on buying a code reader when I used to have the Z3, but I think it’ll be worth it.

Which code reader is the one to go for?

Connor.

petrol only has a shelf life of a couple of months then it really starts to degrade. Either drive it to burn it off or better still, drain it and feed it to the lawnmower if you have one.

You will likely get odd readings through OBD if testing with old fuel.

The fuel light was on when I got it so £10 was put in it to get it home. I will put some more fuel in and see if it’s any better.
Below is a copy of the invoice for the work that could be relevant to the fault I’m having.

Does more than a standard reader I think but costs quite a bit more.

Hmm, sounds interesting. I do like a gadget!
Do you buy a cable, and the app and then you’re ready to go?

Andy, I am about to purchase the C110 reader (I can get it delivered this evening!) do I definitely need the extra adapter as my car has a 2002 build date?

If your port under the bonnet is round like mine (pre-facelift), which I think it is then defo as that's where it plugs into Connor.

Just been out to check, there’s the round one under the bonnet, and a rectangular one under the steering wheel.
Looking online seems to suggest that the rectangular one has limited functions.

Thanks for the help, I’ll get both ordered!

Both good bits of kit. C110 reader is good for reading your codes and looking at what's going on, you can also clear air bag lights etc.

The carly gets better with newer model BMWs because you can change the coding like beep on unlock etc. Carly does offer a few extra functions over the c110 on the z3, like an anti tamper check also live telemetry if you like seeing what the engine is doing. But it is also nearer £150 once you've bought the app and the correct dongle. You can set it up wireless or with a cable.

Thanks for that Lee, the Carly does seem like a good bit of kit, albeit expensive.

I’ll see how this C110 goes and may look to upgrade in future.

Connor.
