Heres my 1998 M44 had it just over 3 years now and done quite a bit to it since i have had it also own a 2.8 z3 in the same colour love driving this and done 16,000 miles in just over 3 years seems to be holding up well little bit of rust appearing on the back of the sills but thats not going to worry me, its had a new starter motor, polybush lollipop bushes, new drop links front, new front disks, new rocker cover gasket recently engine bay had been detailed, had set of nearly new front shock absorbers and nearly new rear shock absorbers, new thermostat, seat bushes have been done has the roll bars off my 2.8 fitted to this, also fitted on board computer, loads of other things i have forgotten to list over the past few years...

My understanding is that the 8v and the 16v ran concurrently till the 2.0 straight 6 came out. At that time the 16v (140hp) was dropped, ie replaced, performance wise, by the 2.0 straight 6 at 148hp making the 1.9 16v unnecessary.

This is correct .
iIf you don't include the z3m models.
Pre face-lift zeds initially 1.9 16v and 2.8 6cyl then 1.9 8v added ( badged 1.8)
Then as you say when face-lift model introduced the 1.9 16v ( m44) dropped the 2.8 also followed soon after leaving the face-lift line up as
1.9 8v , 2.0 6cyl , 2.2 6cyl and 3.0 6cyl.
For European markets .

I still have my two M44s with DASC. I did a total repaint on the Boston Green last year and did some major mods to the induction and cooling on the white 97.

What's that thing to the side of the inlet manifold with the pully/belt. Not a supercharger is it?

Edit.
OK so it is a supercharger. To be honest I never knew what DASC meant. I just saw the thing in the photo.

Wow. What do they go like with that kit? Horsepower?

You used to see supercharger kits on ebay for m44 if memory serves was around 1k for full kit ( Inc manifold and charger) for around a 50 bhp gain .
I'm sure @Steve F will be able to supply better info as he actually has one.
If memory also serves me right a number of insurance companies will not touch it in UK with a charger kit fitted.
Stephen.
