Well my new super duper Stewart water pump arrived this morning well it didn't really I had to pick it up from Parcel Force !! Why because they wanted a further £41 for VAT import charges and their handling fee !!

So on top of the £146 I paid for the pump and postage that must make it the most expensive Z3 water pump you can buy !!

Think I should have got one for £38 from the bay !! After all I guess it only pumps water after all !

Fitted the water pump and new thermostat this afternoon and as expected the water pump I took out was in excellent condition even though having a plastic expeller !!! The whole job only took about hour and half but I was lucky everything came off easy.

You can see the difference in the pumps and the one I took out was the original and done 76k and still perfect

Piece of mind knowing its done and it was a joy to do.

Wow is that the result of a pump failure Gaz ?
I have absolutely no idea what happened. Just reversed off my drive, set off 10 yds down the road and clattering sound. Looked under bonnet and the fan shroud and blades have disintegrated!

Engine runs fine and as far as I can see the water pump is OK, but the radiator has sprung a leak. :(

You changed the water pump a few weeks ago right ? Looks like the blades of the fan have hit something low down

Thanks for the excellent and clear pictures, and good luck with the repair. I am about ready to start replacing the thermostat so you can see why I find the shots appealing.
So, can I assume that what happened was the bearings in the water pump that the shaft rides on failed and thereby allowed the shaft to move and get caught in the fan shroud?
Thanks Gary

On the initial failure that's correct. The jury is still out on this mornings failure though!?!?

So, it looks like the fan blades sheared off. My first guess would be that they where weakened by the initial failure. After all they did pry the fan shroud away from the radiator.
I would try running the engine and listening / watching for any problem with the new pump. Check for free play, take the belt off etc. If nothing wrong then just replace the plastic fan blade assembly and give it a go?
What is the fan delete mod?

It was a new fan blade fitted because the fin which caught in the cowl bent, so would have been off balance.

The engine runs perfectly fine, but will take the drive belt off and check the new pump when I fit a new radiator.

The fan delete mod, is fitting an electric fan instead of the standard fan. There are a couple of advantages, in the main that if the pump fails there is no fan spinning on the end if it so it can't destroy the radiator in this way. Also the standard fan saps power from the engine, so you get a small performance boost and slightly better fuel consumption too.

Have you not got aircon gary as the a/c fan can be utilised by fitting a lower temp switch.

If you fit a lower temp fan thermostat switch off a M44 it will bring in the aircon fan at a lower temp thus making it cool as though it is the primary fan. Normally the switch is set to bring the fan on in just over 100 but putting a new lower temp switch in brings the fan on in the lower 90's which works quite well apparantly. I will dig out someore info for you later but suffice to say it will work out alot cheaper for you this way. I am going to do it myself and planned doing a how to but you may beat me to it. ;)

Ok I think the part number for the stat switch you will need is 61318376440 which is the 80/88 version switch off the M44 but you will have to check the connector socket is correct as apparently they did make them with two types of connector so best take the one off your radiator and check it is correct. An eBay search comes up with the following listing which may aid you plus here is the Realoem link too.

The one fitted to yours appears to be listed as a 91/99 switch as per here;

I'm lucky in that my Z had it's water pump and radiator replaced about 30,000 miles ago. Hopefully I've got a ways to go before this happens to me. I hope you get her fixed up real soon !
