'Sometimes you have to lick the stamp and send it'

More from Daniel Ricciardo: "Twenty four hours ago I thought I would be at the back of the grid so firstly thanks the boys, today is the real reward for that work."

"It was hectic I heard about the safety car in turn 14 and they said come in. It all happened quickly. It was decisive and I got the win."

On his overtakes, he said: "Sometimes you have got to lick the stamp and send it. We had the soft tyre so knew I could get more out of the breaking."

Jamie Squibbs: Lewis Hamilton only nine points behind Sebastian Vettel now... considering Lewis started fourth and Vettel on pole with already a 17 point advantage. That isn’t a bad result for the Brit after all

Ian Jones: Top race. Ricciardo is a class act. Not a big fan of Vettel but he's been utterly shafted by Max and that sad excuse of a penalty

Prakhar Tewari: Max Verstappen should be banned for couple of races then only he will learn Such a stupid person always causes problems for others

Yesterday and today a disaster - Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton who finished fourth: "I was in no man's land today. I had no pace and was just trying to hold on for whatever I had.

Asked how he viewed his position in the title race: "I am not quite sure. We have got a tough battle ahead of us, particularly on my side."

"We have been underperforming. Yesterday and today was a disaster on my side. I have got to rectify that and get back into normal performance mode otherwise more points will be lost. (We were) thankful for a few incidents ahead that kept us in the battle."

Verstappen not young anymore - Vettel

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel on his crash with Max Verstappen: "I didn't see him until late and left a bit of room. I was expecting him to come earlier. I had no intention of resisting, there was no point in doing so they were too fast. I didn't want to compromise my race."

"He did a mistake and locked up which happens. He misjudged it and compromised both of our results."

"He is not young anymore he has had enough races but that can happen when you have done 300 races. He could have taken the front wing off and then it would be game over for both of us. We were both lucky but that is how it goes."

Jennifer Harris: "It's always amazed me why people rave so much over Max. Today he has shown his immaturity by allowing his fame to convince him he's invunerable. Grow up Max. You were lucky to only get a 10 sec penalty, should have been a race ban.

Go away little girl, its called 'Racing' ffs

BREAKING Verstappen in the wall
Nothing representative from either Ferrari man yet, and at the top of the timesheets Daniel Ricciardo has moved into first, 1:45.369 for him. Max Verstappen is second with Mercedes three and four.

Max Verstappen is in the wall! Smoke coming from both of his front tyres. He slides off the track at turn five, is facing the wrong way and looks to have done some damage to his Red Bull. Oh dear, oh dear.

Mercedes aren't done yet. Valtteri Bottas is fastest, Lewis Hamilton is third, with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo sandwiched in the middle.

Verstappen or Ricciardo? Who do you prefer and why?

Jazim Sohail: A lot has been made of Verstappen recently due to his poor form and judgement but I think he is definitely the better driver in that team and possibly can challenge for the title this year

Kieran: Max is quick, but has no racecraft, therefore Daniel is better

Andrew Ogley: Max is having a 'mare ... two practice sessions, two crashes ... possibly over-driving?

Verstappen v Ricciardo debate

Chris: I'd say that Verstappen is a tiny bit faster, and has more flair. Ricciardo is the more complete driver, and approaches racing more maturely. I'm trying to think of a good comparison. A little like Hill and Villeneuve when they were both at Williams. Is that fair?

PtheP: As a wise man once said: to finish first, first you have to finish. Ricciardo for me (and I bet he's much more fun down the pub!)

Kay Challis: They’re both about equal, but for different reasons. Max is quicker over a single lap and is arguably the faster driver, but he’s impetuous which is often his downfall. Danny is the more consistent and more measured overall driver, which ultimately brings him more rewards in F1.

Max Verstappen is back on the track. Well, he was, as he locks up early in his first lap (turn three) and dives off the track.
Luckily, there is no wall this time to greet him. A disastrous day for the Dutchman so far, but it could've got a lot, lot worse.
