Lewis Hamilton was only third fastest in second practice at the US Grand Prix as Mercedes team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg set the pace.

Hamilton was 0.291 seconds slower than Rosberg, with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo splitting the Mercedes.

Rosberg heads Hamilton by 33 points in the championship with 100 still available in the remaining four races.

Hamilton badly needs to win in Austin on Sunday to revive his rapidly faltering hopes of retaining his title.

Final practice is at 16:00 BST on Saturday, with qualifying at 19:00.

The stakes are high

If Lewis Hamilton is to win a fourth world championship then the task is simple - win the four remaining races of the season. Easier said than done for someone who hasn't won a race since July's German Grand Prix.

But even if he manages that it might not be enough because if Nico Rosberg comes home second in each of the remaining races, then he will be world champion.

The pressure's on but the good thing for us observers is, it should make for a thrilling finish to the season.

I think they might take each other out, like in the old days, who want's to bet on that?

Darn it....
Verstappen out.......:(
