Who says modern F1 is rubbish?
Posted at14:34

Lewis Hamilton's pole time of 1:08.455 is just 0.547secs slower than the all-time quickest lap at this track, which was set by Michael Schumacher in a 2003 Ferrari.

With a 3.0-litre V10.

In the middle of a tyre war.

And with unlimited fuel flow.

Not bad for a hybrid.

Big, big accident
Posted at13:03
Alonso and Raikkonen have had a massive crash on the run out of turn two. Safety car is out.
Not sure what has gone on yet but the McLaren of Alonso is ON TOP of Raikkonen's Ferrari by the side of the track.
Both drivers out and OK.

Jenson Button: "Is Fernando OK? Is Fernando OK?"

More on Alonso, Raikkonen tangle
Posted at13:06
Replays suggest that Raikkonen's Ferrari got loose as he accelerated out of turn two - cold tyres? - and got a tank-slapper on.
As the speed was scrubbed off the Ferrari he was collected by Alonso running close behind, the two cars becoming entwined as they collided with the barriers on the left of the track, with the McLaren riding up on the sidepod and monocoque of the Ferrari.
Raikkonen was lucky to escape injury there.

'They are both very lucky'

Former world champion Nigel Mansell tweets: "They are looking back at car thinking wow we both walked away, I would say they are very lucky."

We have no 5B

David Coulthard
BBC F1 co-commentator
Posted at13:21

"We know that there was radio communication between Jenson and his engineer. The engineer said 'Jenson, select 5B.' Jenson replied 'there is no 5B.'

"The head of Honda is in the pit lane visiting McLaren. At least he'll have time to get to know the drivers."

Jeremiah: Jenson has served his purpose! To serve the penalty and retire the car. Not sure he managed his objective of collecting data!
Mihail Nesterovich: That was a really short testing session for McLaren today!
Jonny Green: Something must change at McLaren. Another double DNF. A team that didn't exist at start of year has better reliability!

Sean Harrison: Apart from Q3 yesterday, this has been a scruffy weekend from Hamilton.

Steve Bradley: Petty rules & penalties utterly ruining F1. Fans want to see men racing. What next? 500 lines and detentions?

Chris Miller: Wonder who Lewis will blame for his error this week?

I saw a car under my car'
Posted at14:14

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso, on his crash with Kimi Raikkonen on lap one: "It was obviously quite scary. The start was very good. Kimi had a lot of wheel spin out of turn two. We were overtaking him and he lost the car on the left. I was on the left. I could not see anything. I looked in the mirror and saw a car under my car. I jumped quickly to see he was OK. I saw he was so was happy."

Fernando Alonso on Twitter: From 19 to 14 in two corners... the rest... Impossible to avoid the car of Kimi when lost control... Glad to see we are all ok!!

Maldonado on the up
Posted at14:27

Pastor Maldonado has become a much steadier pair of hands in recent times.

He raced very well in Canada to score his first points of the season and he doing the same again today. He's all over Verstappen in the battle for sixth and it looks only a matter of time before the Lotus passes the Toro Rosso.

Also, if he sees the chequered flag today he'll make it 100 days without a crash.

Well, I enjoyed that race for a change, a lot of weird things going on and great to see Massa on the podium again....
McLaren...?...What is going on there?
Button said this.........

'I don't know what the problem is'
McLaren driver Jenson Button speaks to BBC Sport on his retirement from the race:
"The team said I had to do some switch changes on the car. I tried but made no difference. I don't think there's anything broken. I don't know what the problem is."

On the first lap accident which ended Kimi Raikkonen's and Fernando Alonso's race: "The accident looked like Kimi tried to get on the power, went one way, tried to correct and went the other way. A horrible accident. I'm glad they are OK. A pity for us as it'll make the test a lot trickier next week."

Rosberg wins in Austria

Summary
  1. Rosberg wins, Hamilton 2nd
  2. Rosberg overtakes Hamilton at start
  3. Hamilton handed five second penalty
  4. Alonso lands on top of Raikkonen in dramatic crash
  5. Alonso, Raikkonen, Stevens, Button, Sainz, Grosjean out

Jamie Squibbs: Happy for Massa. Bit lucky with Vettel's slow pit-stop but a great drive for a great podium.

Nobody'sOpinion: Would have liked to have seen a dogfight between Rosberg & Hamilton towards the end of the race especially with Rosberg having an edge on pace.

Nick Bennetts: Not a fantastic GP, but it was far more exciting than Canada.

David Redmond: Thought that race was one of the better ones this season. Fair play to Rosberg blew Hamilton away.

Bishop Yinkus: Hate to admit it but credit to Nico despite giving Hamilton pole, he still stormed forward and won.

Nick: At least swearing on the podium makes the sport a smidge more exciting...

Lovely use of the word smidge there.

Did Raikkonen simply lose it?
Posted at15:22

"Exactly what happened in the scary crash between Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso remains unclear, but replays are starting to emerge on the internet and one of them seems to suggest pretty definitively that Raikkonen simply lost it and turned sharp left into the McLaren.

"Alonso said he felt a lack of grip from the Ferrari's tyres might be to blame: 'It was obviously quite scary. Kimi started with the prime tyre, which probably didn't help for the level of grip. He exited Turn Two with a lot of wheelspin so the car was moving. We were all overtaking him left and right and when he lost the car to the left I was on the left. We went both on the wall and I was lucky to not hit him on the head. I was braking but my wheels were in the air. Luckily we were both fine. I was in the wrong place. It was a very strange incident. He lost the car in fifth gear or something like that.''

Badger GP

Congratulations to NICO ROSBERG - Winner of the Austrian Grand Prix ahead of an unhappy Lewis Hamilton.

No one else could touch them, but beyond the top 2, we had Felipe Massa fending off Sebastian Vettel for 3rd after the German had a tricky pitstop. Elsewhere, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen collected each other on lap 1, both fortunately ok though.

Bottas pulled off some great moves, Verstappen and Maldonado had some tussles. MALDONADO didn't crash. Maldonado didn't crash (written twice for confirmation)

McLaren once again failed to finish with either car. Force India came away with P6 and P9 for Hulkenberg and Perez. Red Bull Racing scored a single point for Ricciardo in 10th, after he was overtaken by a Toro Rosso.

So there we have it, a decent race, by 2015 standards at least.

McLaren still nowhere, Mercedes still dominate, Red Bull still having a mardy, Williams taking it to Ferrari, Everyone else squabbling in the midfield.

One final note to Roberto Merhi though - brought home the Manor F1 Teamcar in 14th place, not bad at all.
