Over the next two days we’ve taken in @Nodzed stunning Z3M in primer. :D

He was complaining of a noisy release bearing and the gearstick sitting to the right when cold both of which are quite common on all Z3’s. All the larger engine Z3’s use the same gearbox, even the M’s.

So the first thing to do was get her in the garage and up in the air, again all work is performed on axle stands.

Once in the air the first job was to remove the centre section of the exhaust allowing access to the prop. This was quite difficult, the bolts were ok but the flanges didn’t want to come apart. We also only needed to remove the front section of the prop.

Now I had good access it was time to get the slave out the way. Also disconnect the reverse switch along with lamda probes.

also make sure the gear linkages don’t take your eye out. They have a habit of sacking you in the face when your not looking.

We then proceeded to remove all the gearbox bolts with a mix of female torx sockets E11, E12 & E14. The next bit is the fun bit. Wrap your arms round it and wiggle. Bit by bit it should start to wobble off showing the dusty clutch assembly.

Then bit by bit we removed each item.

Also a very worn clutch plate. This was very close to giving up. The rivets were very close also the fibre started to Frey on the inner 15mm of the disc.

And with everything removed.

Safe to say it was perfect timing to replace everything. Also the release bearing was howling when spun by hand.

comparing the clutch disc next to the new one.

and comparing new n old items.

Whilst waiting for some new bits to arrive it was worth fitting the new assembly.

first on was the new flywheel with fresh loctite

next the alignment tool and new clutch disc.

And finally the pressure plate.

so next we turnt our attention to the gearbox. It has a few weeps and a very worn fork. All on their way from BMW. We’ll also be fitting new shift pins tomorrow. Hopefully hiding from the storm. (I also reached the 20 image max)

So today we had the lovely job of replacing the shift pins. Quite a simple job but has potential to go wrong very quickly.

The tooling required
along with pins, guides and new springs.

The reason why we’re replacing the shift pins is due to the 5th gear lean, this is where the gear stick leans to the right and you struggle to find the gates till its warm, it’s more of an annoyance than a serious problem. This is due to the guide sleeve wearing down its coating and grabbing the pin not allowing it to centralise the shaft inside

Luckily for us this is not our first rodeo so we decided to tackle the hardest pins first. Reverse and 5th gear.

Reverse is the top pin and 5th is the one below.
50C115EE-5011-43C7-B35A-43918E6739E9.jpeg

Remove the clip and punch a hole in the cap. We screw in a self tapper and pull the cap out. Once open remove the spring and indent pin, now the hard part you need to collapse the guide so you can pull it out without scoring the bore. Once out you can punch the new bush in.

Now rinse repeat on 5th gear.

B75A04E8-E3A3-4117-A447-AF603D07A8F2.jpeg
thats the hard pins done.
5543948C-2DC1-4091-9BC8-20212684E8D3.jpeg

now the easy pins. These you just need to fit a new insert in so they take 15mins to do for all 3.

A6CC2387-EBD1-4FBA-9FD6-0A2ADC7C2E30.jpeg

Now that’s out the way with some fresh oil the gearbox should be shifting like brand new :D
Before we can fit the box we need a new clutch fork these wear more than you think

Tomrrow morning we’ll be fitting the last few bits ready for re assembly.

So to finish the thread up, today we took delivery of some bits from BMW allowing us to fit the gearbox. The key item being the pivot pin and clutch fork.
85CF9F0D-06A3-438B-9205-14B8E1FB89B4.jpeg

Also while everything was off it makes sense to change the Guibo or flex disc as some people call it.
2F93FD6E-AF79-4136-A81F-3EB0F1777E3A.jpeg

the final piece of the puzzle was to stick in the new gearbox oil. The old stuff was 3 years old and used to be red in colour.
97E0228D-7B1E-47BF-BADF-8E86BF2C5405.jpeg

2 hours later everything was back in and tight. Not a single bolt left =))

Test drive went perfectly, the gearbox shifts so nice and crisp, the gates can be felt and no 5th gear lean anymore. Now ready for collection tomorrow.

Another good write up, it wouldn’t have occurred to me about the clutch fork wear.
Nor me. I noticed it when I pulled my engine out my Zed. For the sake of £25 from BMW it’s worth fitting a new one.

do the clutch units come with a pre-loading mechanism that you have to remove?
I thought I had seen that somewhere
Not on this type of clutch. The only loaded mechanism is the pressure plate itself. You hold the clutch disc central and the pressure plate pulls down tight on it to keep it central on the fingers. You also have the preload from the slave loading the release bearing.
