Over the next two days we’ve taken in @Nodzed stunning Z3M in primer.
He was complaining of a noisy release bearing and the gearstick sitting to the right when cold both of which are quite common on all Z3’s. All the larger engine Z3’s use the same gearbox, even the M’s.
So the first thing to do was get her in the garage and up in the air, again all work is performed on axle stands.
Once in the air the first job was to remove the centre section of the exhaust allowing access to the prop. This was quite difficult, the bolts were ok but the flanges didn’t want to come apart. We also only needed to remove the front section of the prop.
Now I had good access it was time to get the slave out the way. Also disconnect the reverse switch along with lamda probes.
also make sure the gear linkages don’t take your eye out. They have a habit of sacking you in the face when your not looking.
We then proceeded to remove all the gearbox bolts with a mix of female torx sockets E11, E12 & E14. The next bit is the fun bit. Wrap your arms round it and wiggle. Bit by bit it should start to wobble off showing the dusty clutch assembly.
Then bit by bit we removed each item.
a
Also a very worn clutch plate. This was very close to giving up. The rivets were very close also the fibre started to Frey on the inner 15mm of the disc.
And with everything removed.
Safe to say it was perfect timing to replace everything. Also the release bearing was howling when spun by hand.
comparing the clutch disc next to the new one.
and comparing new n old items.
Whilst waiting for some new bits to arrive it was worth fitting the new assembly.
first on was the new flywheel with fresh loctite
next the alignment tool and new clutch disc.
And finally the pressure plate.
so next we turnt our attention to the gearbox. It has a few weeps and a very worn fork. All on their way from BMW. We’ll also be fitting new shift pins tomorrow. Hopefully hiding from the storm. (I also reached the 20 image max)
