Hi all
Just had to post a question having spent the summer switching between my zeds.
Why is it that when I'm out and about in Rosie my 1997 z3 I get lots of friendly waves from fellow z3 owners... But when I'm in Charlie my 2012 z4 I get almost no waves from z4 owners despite my best efforts! Am I missing something? Is there a secret wave or special signal I should know about??

Exactly that, most Z4 owners are grumpy so and sos. i lost my enthusiasm for waving some time in to owning my first Z4. There is a different vibe around the Z4, just not quite the same enthusiasm to be sociable.

Perhaps it has to do with Z4 owners reading mostly negative comments about Z4's here on this forum amongst others, even if it is "tongue in cheek" some people (not including me) feel that there is a 3 versus 4 going on!

I wave at Z3's regularly and have not had any response either.

Tony.

The best response I've had was an MX5 owners group going the other way. They were very enthusiastic and friendly.

I would say that it's just an age thing really. As the Z3 is getting on its probably a second "hobby" car whereas the Z4 is newer and probably a daily drive for most.

I wave at both Z4s and Z3s :p
Some times I get a wave some times I don't :)
And yes I do get more waves of Z3s ;)
But I don't mind ;)
It's their loss for not joining in the fun ;)

down to the Z3 being better and Z4 Owners realising there mistake :) (had both sorry ), think its down to the z3 now becoming a classic, the z4 is still being made (different model but same idea) there's no similarities between the 2 and classic car owners tend to notice other classic car owners ?

Having owned both a Z4 and a Z3 we certainly get more waves in the 3 than we ever did in the 4. I think one of the problems is that people who now buy a 4 do not realise the 3 is their predecessor as it looks nothing like a 4. We very rarely get a wave from a 4 when we are in our 3 and I don't think 4 owners have the same spirit of camaraderie that 3 owners enjoy as for lots of 4 owners it is a daily drive. However, lots of friendly banter on here though....and long may it continue;)

I wave at other Z4s and some wave back and some don't. I suspect there are some who wave at me but I don't notice them because I have other things on my mind when I'm driving to work and back.

I also wave at Z3s and don't think one has ever waved back.

As for the Z3 vs Z4 debate....each to their own.....I do 1000 miles a month commuting to work and back....I just want to drive it, not tinker with it or have to worry about any of the age related issues I see discussed on here....I even get someone else to clean it

To be honest that's part of the reasoning behind getting the car I did, with such low miles I'm hoping it will lead to little maintainance, again as its my one and only car, I can't afford to render it unusable while I pamper it as I could with my Z3. I enjoy my Z4 just as much as I did my Z3, probably more so if I'm honest.

Tony.

You're quite probably right there Dave.:D As I've said before, if my Z3 had been a 2.8 or a 3.0 I might not have bought this car. But that's history now.

Tony.

In hindsight I actually wave/flash Z3'ers only...not sure why, but I'll give it a go:

1. Z3 are becoming rare, and those in good roadworthy condition are even rarer, plus they don't hold water really good: that makes it not a suitable daily driver, hence those who drive one are, in my mind, real enthusiasts...it takes some sort of commitment to chose a much older and less modern car for the same price or, in some cases, pay even more.

2. Z4 are still fairly recent and they sort of sold a lot more than the Z3, so you see many more around, are easier to daily, hence I am assuming the drivers don't really care about the passion or the community of those who own one.

It goes without saying that all Z'ers on this forum are enthusiasts, otherwise they wouldn't be here so what stated above does not apply.

No we're not @GazHyde, Grumpy is Grumpy, he drives a Zed3. The EnthuZiaZT aren't Grumpy we drive a Zed4 and wave to lots of Zed3 owners that sometimes don't wave back, except for Grumpy of course who waves at everybody, because he's just Grumpy.

Mentioned already - Many Z4s are the main car, and despite driving them and loving them, many owners haven't twigged that there is a like minded community. Many Z3's on the other hand wouldn't be still on the road if their owners weren't part of a wider community that adores their cars and exchanges information and mutual respect. Consequently, they're more clued into to responding to other Z3 owners.
I'll start waving again when the restraining order lapses =))

No discrimination here, I wave at all varients of Zed's even when I'm in my Freelander :cool:I've taken to waving to an old boy and his Mrs that have a TD4 same colour and year as mine, they both wave back and smile. I even waved at a Boxster once though I did give myself a dam good talking to when I got home, the shame ;)

There will be a Z15 by then
