Hi my name is Lizzie.

I am the proud owner of a Z3 Automatic 2.8 Roadster.
I have named her Zoe.
I purchased her in August 2014 and have had many happy hours driving around in her and had hoped for many more.I have a real problem that I shall post below in the hope that somebody out there can help.

Hi There.

Thanks for coming back. We took it to a garage after the gearbox gained a problem. They sorted gear box out but the existing ECU had blown. They replaced it with the wrong ECU, and threw the existing one away. The car only drives now in sports mode and won't hit 4th gear. It appears the existing incorrect ECU is sending wrong messages to gear box. BMW informs us that the part number we submitted to you is the correct one for the car. Unfortunately it is discontinued hence us trying to obtain a used one from a breaker or wherever!

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards.

Lizzie and Charlie

what part number is on the one fitted now?

one thing you could try is disconnect the battery then reconnect after 10 seconds or so, it may re-boot the ecu.

You do need to get one with the same I'd. as the original, then I would have it checked/repaired just to be on the safe side before fitting it.

some auto ecu will store adaptions, they adapt to the driver, these can be re-set, now wondering if a different ecu would need to be coded to the car.

Most likely would need recoding, to the "new" car. A guy at work fitted a customer supplied ABS ECU which needed coding to the new car, unfortunately it didn't work correctly so he sent his original one away for repair. When it came back to us I re fitted it and after bleeding it up it didn't need any coding or fault codes clearing.

Tony.

It may work recoded but the part number you gave has no cross references to others that fit.
The ecu could possibly have been repaired by.
BBA Reman they fix them just advised they be contacted.
Is there no recourse with the garage fitting wrong parts ??
