Yes looking pretty convincing that it's one stage (although I haven't found anything definite, I'm convinced enough)

I'd say it's more than likely you have a single stage airbag.

If you remove your steering wheel, and it has just connection to the bag, it's a single stage. Dual stage has 2 connections.
All Z4 bags are dual stage with 2 connections

Not exactly. 99 was a crossover year. Some of the 99 cars got the TU upgrades which included a dual stage airbag.

The prefacelift TU cars hits the sweet pot on the Z3 market IMHO.

Being a bit slow today but what's "TU"?

The throttle action was changed from a manual to a hybrid manual / electric drive, and a dual Vanos vs single Vanos.

Yes, the current one is so chunky but the z4 one is slimmer, slightly more period but retains the airbag

I was thinking of using a z3 one like this.

It's slimmer than the M wheel and I thought a bit of wood on the wheel might look a bit period. I'd maybe add some wood to the center console as well.
