Not quite sure what you mean, the 3 needs to be lifted back to engage for lowering the roof and when it raises it gets to just past the vertical point and drops freely down for you to pull it shut and close the clamps. None of this malarkey with the 4.

I love these 3 v 4 threads, they confuse the heck out of me that is why i tried to emphasise the opinion of others does not matter, it comes down to what YOU think.

I have been looking at a few Z4 Coupes recently but in the back of my mind is this very topic! I love my 3 and its character but is it because it's just what I know.

If you can get a prolonged test drive go for it, let us know the outcome please :)

You shouldn't have to do that, the frame joints ought to be free enough to allow you to give the front edge a shove backwards from either front seat only.

the opinion of others does not matter
Absolutely agree Brian, but when someone asks it would be rude not to confuse them:). Otherwise I would have already sold my Z4 and been back in the Z3.;)

ummm, mine must be abit stiff, then theres the bit where you need to ensure the rear window is flexing correctly or cracked screen hell is where you are. if i dont fold the first section it will only go half way down, is this not correct? sorry to hijack this thread, maybe i need to ask these questions in a separate thead

I know the new model is probably better in many respects but think it becomes a car without the character of the current one.
And because I have never driven one I like the Freelander 2, but went for a Tiguan because I love diesel scandals

Diesels have their place - lots of low end torque (as long as you've got more than 2L). Makes stop start and low speed driving much easier - just let the clutch out and off she goes.

so how does the hydraulics on the 3 get around the first bit (the bit where you have to lift the front) electric roof will make it a harder choice for kit:whistle:
I have an electric hydraulic roof, and have driven very slowly with the foot just touching the brake and put the roof up and down. Don't have the button to do it remote like my brothers, that does look cool as you come up to the car in the car park.

Yes, you only have to have the brake lights illuminated, not actually applying any brake pressure. Not all Z4's have the remote roof dropping feature (which is cool) but you can have it re-programmed by a technician. There are several people offering such services on eBay. One is located in Derby I think and he charges an amount to check all and any upgrades possible on your car. If you google it there is a post on there which tells you that 3 quick successive presses on your remote will do it. I haven't remembered to try it yet. One for tomorrow.

I chose my car purely on looks. I've never been influenced by extras of any car I've owned and in fact I've never used the air con or the heated seats and I've had it over 2yrs now. I think the Z3 roadster is better looking than the Z4 roadster, but then again I really like the Z4 coupe.

But then again, I really like tall, long legged ladies and I don't suppose I'll get one of them either:(

What's this about using the brake pedal? Is that on the Z3?
Mine drops the roof while keeping the unlock button pressed. Didn't know you could set it up to open on three blips. might just have to try that too. Thanks.

If the car is moving, then to operate the roof the brake lights need to be lit. I think this also applies to the Z4 too Ian, although I can't remember lowering my roof on the 4 whilst moving to be honest. Again one for tomorrow.
The thing about 3 presses came from my manager at work. I asked him if our gear at work could re-programme my car to do this as he used to work at Sopers in Lincoln. He found that info on his phone as we chatted. Like I said, I don't know whether it works or not yet.

Tony.

ps. Most if not all cars with electrically operated soft tops have this safety switch in their operating mechanism, even the old Escort Cabrio's had to have the handbrake applied (lighting the warning light on the dash) to operate the roof.
