How To Guide Z3 intrument cluster replacement

I want to replace the old instrument cluster in my '97 Z3.
I have the cluster but understand that there is some sort of calibration I have to do. In simple step by step idiot proof bullet point format, what do I need to do. Is it really as simple as just holding in the trip meter button?

Instrument cluster coding plugs - swapping

One for the serious techies here I think. Taking an instrument cluster coding plug from a m44 1.9 pre-facelift and putting it into a 2.8 99 facelift...... Will it work as is ? Or need some coding correction ? I can see the part numbers on the two plugs in question are identical. I've swapped...
