I think this is a worthwhile project to get my teeth into. I was in manufacturing procurement for 40 years so I would not like to be beaten now by a couple of metal straps !!!!!=))=))
if anyone has either one that could be used to copy and is willing to let me borrow them, then please PM me.

If you get stuck I will happily sponsor the project if I can buy a second hand pair. I’ll have a look round.

Does your procurement experience cover mainly engineered parts like this? As I can think of a number of injection moulded parts that would be useful. But I do know moulds are not cheap.

I have had dealings over the years with plastic injection moulding, high pressure and sand castings in Aluminium, but mostly fabrication and machine engineered parts.
With injection moulding, unless you are aiming to produce thousands of parts the tooling costs are not viable.
Looking at the pictures of these straps, somewhere there must have been production tooling in the form of press parts.
It’s possible that the tooling has become worn out and unserviceable and BMW don’t want to spend any money on replacing them for a car that’s 20 years old.

Looking at this with great interest, and wondering if the stainless steel banding used to secure palleted goods could be utilised with a fastening rather than going down the expensive route of manufacturing? Or would this idea throw up other issues?

Looks good.

You need to change the connection at the front where the strap hooks into tne body. There will be some bimetallic corrosion with the mild steel corroding faster, being anode vs stainless. If you put a plastic strip between the two parts this will insulate the joint and fix it.
