I don't doubt that these engines make/made quoted power when new.
Ive driven this engine in new e36 3series as well as e39 5series in auto guise and if anything it felt stronger than quoted numbers.

If anything the 2.8 could be quoted low in the handbook as it was restricted to that number for certain countries taxation laws (by purposely fitting a strangled intake to reduce the output)

I understand that certain M engines have a reputation for being overstated but for the 2.8 I'd expect full power achievable (and more with the right intake).

There is a 5th gear episode about restoring horses to an older engine and if I recall correct a proper service and injector clean made a measurable difference.

Hi, Thanks all for the chat.

I got the emissions checked today, it failed, 0.7 for the CO, it should be below 0.2.

I am pleased if anything as there is a problem clearly now. My car is going to get faster!

Will report back.

Cheers, Sam

I have just used some BG 44K in mine and so far done about 50 miles and you can notice a difference and I do expect a noticeable difference the more miles I do as I used the stuff before in my Alfa and after a 100 or so miles the difference was night and day! not that I'd use the stuff again until another 40k as I have a feeling its quite powerful stuff

I thought it was "snake oil" like a lot of the others I have tried that is ok when its in the tank but after you cars back to normal but after reading the reviews online I decided to try some and raved about it ever since :)

2.8 m52 were never really 190 in standard form , you'd be lucky to get 180 standard ,

Common thing to get a considerable amount more power , m50 325 inlet manifold and remaped ecu to match you can expect around 220 230 hp at the flywheel , also taking the cat off always helps with freeing up abit of power , , you can pick manifold and ecu kits up for around £200 and decat pipe off a e36 will fit I believe

Google bmw enthusiasts in Peterborough speak to Lewis he will sort you out with ecu and manifold +fitting kit ecu has a raised rev limit to 7300 I believe, sounds epic !!!!

Oh please let me know. Mine has failed at 0.54 on co2. I've been advised the likely cause is the cat which if knackered could also be causing a small lack of power on yiyrs? Worth checking maybe?

Thanks Tommy, I was afraid @Sam was chasing a phantom trying to get to the 190hp rating stock. Your experience should prove invaluable to him as he tries to pull more HP out of his engine for whatever end use. Good luck both of you in your endeavours and please keep us informed?? JIM

I had the M52 manifold conversion carried out on my old 1998 2.8 and a remap to boot (no exhaust changes though) . The rolling road readout was about 196 BHP afterwards if I remember correctly. I was a bit disappointed at the time but I did not have "before and after" readings so perhaps it had added more than I thought. It was worth it for the noise though, changed the character of the car completely and it felt immediately faster.

Sounds like you may of either had a m50b20 manifold from a 2.0 or it's not been mapped properly buddy , plenty of people out their with between 220 to even 240 with exhaust mods and wider throttle body

Hi Tommy is it possible to get a twin vanos 2.8 wide throttle body? I did look into this mod but only found it available for a single vanos...

Correct me if im wrong mate but the TU is different to the normal M52 they usually use the M54 manifold.

It has been a while since i did this.
