Z3 2.8 engine change

Do you know what is wrong with the engine? If the numbers stack up, I would prefer to rebuild the original than replace with a (likely) unknown quality unit. Just a thought.
I looked into this with my M54 2.2. It's not viable. It could cost more for a genuine head gasket set alone than the cost of a replacement engine.

There are plenty of reputable engine suppliers around. And plenty of dodgy ones as well I expect. You just need to do your homework. It's also viable to buy a breaker, particularly a write-off so you can hear it running yourself.

this is what the garage told me,
"finding out that the engine was beyond economic repair, low compression on cylinder 1, leaking a little oil into the bore too, the cylinder walls worn out - common issue with that engine of that era".
i get your point. Thanks

If you can find a decent runner then it's going to be cheaper and easier to swap a big bit than mess about rebuilding the dead one, there's just no end to what you'll need to refurb the original. So many things that might as well be changed whilst you're in there. Wish you luck finding a good replacement.

Yes i think your right

If my 1.9 engine needed replacement, I would likely source a good second hand one. If the MC engine needed replacement, I would have the original one rebuilt. Depends on the holistic prospect, future intent and available funds IMO.:)
