The BMW surcharge on the cat was £212.76 plus VAT in June 18 against a "new" BMW cat for my M44. The surcharge reflects the value of the precious metals used in the BMW cat. When you look at the price of aftermarket cats, it is little wonder that they don't work on the M44 (at least). For completeness, the reason the (more powerful) twin cam was discontinued in 1999 was its inability to meet forthcoming emissions requirements.

When I had my 1.9 M44 needed to change complete exhaust bought the rear from site on ebay about £50 and the front with cat from a site online (can't remember which) for about £150 with 2year warranty , when I was looking for the front section there seemed to be two types available , there was the ordinary one and the other was listed as approved and was a bit more expensive but with the 2year warranty , so went for this one don't know what the difference is but all was fitted and car passed the mot with no issues a few months later .
