Hello gang, just after some info on the above please if possible.
Had a look in the Bentley book but the info on this is a bit vague, it only gives BMW specific oils.
It's for the gearbox and differential.

Thank in advance.

Steve.

I got in touch with Opie oils, and they recommended these for my 1.9 diff and gearbox.
Had to buy 2 of each as capacity in each is just over the litre.

According to Bentleys, page 200-2, the 1.9 Manual from 1996 - 1998 all had the Getrag S5D 250 G gearboxes, 1.9 Autos 1996 - 1998 had A4S270R / A4S310 R

( mine is the manual, for which the above oils were recommended) Don't know about Auto .

Oops I should have said it's a manual, year 2001 I think (it's not my zed).

Steve try get a look underneath at your box see if it has the yellow or orange tag will help determine type of oil some ( like my dakar) take automatic transmission fluid in the box some are 75/80 oil.

From what I can see from my History of Z3 book, all the 1.9’s used the same standard gearbox for all years.

But they must have different seals or something as use different oils depending on the age

Oops....I stand corrected Steve...........thats the trouble with manuals, they never give comprehensive details on stuff like that
Opie Oils must know all that when they make their recommendations. Really helpful when I called them, and delivery was quick as well.

Cheers Steve. It's for my father in law's zed.
I'll have a look when they're over here .

Why make it difficult , just phone or look up on web site Opie Oils they will offer you the alternatives for any lubricant you need.
Good prices and service.
Don't forget the discount for zedorg
We need to support those who support us.

Just to confirm what others have said --- ensure you can remove the filling plug before removing the bottom plug.

For the small cost involved I change plugs as well.

You will be luicky if the label is still on the gearbox after all these years, if the car has an owners handbook it should show the oil spec in there either ATF or the oil. My 1.9 from 1999 takes ATF. Well worth doing as BMW fill for life so the car probably has the original fluid in it. A change of fluid makes a lot of difference to the gear change.

Well worth doing. Difference noticed immediately

Sealed for life seems to mean until the part packs up due to lubricant having lost its lubrication ability, long before it would with proper renewals.
