Hi and Welcome. I run my Z3 tires at 32 PSI all round. I've played with everything from 29 - 34 so far and 32 appears to be the best so far. In fairness the manual suggests 31...

I don't have a massive amount of experience with Z4's but I have driven one or two. I think they do suffer from tramlining similar to Z3's. Again as people have already said, larger wheels and tire choice will magnify this effect. If it is very pronounced then get someone who knows what they are looking at to get under there with a pry bar and check all your bushes!

EDIT: Also worth mentioning, checking the rear of the vehicle is as important because flex at the back can translate to the front very easily. Especially on rear wheel drive cars.

Hi and welcome.

As mentioned several times already - almost certainly tram-lining. Many major roads have ruts created from HGVs. The track on cars isn't large enough to sit in these ruts. The large tyres only have to catch the edge of the rut one side to the other and then have you wandering all over to find a straight line again. Find a newly laid and flat section of road and see if it occurs there.
Could be old tyres, different tyres left & right or incorrect pressures exacerbating the problem it if it is.
I did experience a problem steering rack on an old car once. That gave the same effect. That you don't need.

Mmmm are we missing the obvious? Is the car tracked correctly this would be the first thing I would try, regardless of tyre condition. get a good 4 wheel track done (Use a specialist though). People have this equipment installed but don't know how to use them half the time.

I would have thought the stealer would have done that, but of course, that's too much to expect isn't it.

I would try putting someone else's wheels on it and have a go. If that fixes the problem you have saved yourself a lot of grief and $ and time wasting.

My 4 does not show any sign of tramlining whatsoever, never heard anyone say that this is a problem on the Z4, But My Z3 was prone to this (as they all are) even though I tried everything to eradicate it fully.

With you on that one Jim. My Z4 is great. But my Z3 when I bought it was horrible, when I changed the tyres it's 99 % gone.

Tony.

I can tell when I get home Andy. I can tell you it's a staggered set up on 17's but I can't remember the size and make although it's on here somewhere in a tramlining thread!:)

Tony.

My Z3 suffers scarily at times. When doing 50+ (with is rare :D) I hold on tight with both hands. I have a good matching set of tyres all round so put it down to worn bushes and suspension which I'm hoping to have replaced over winter if pennies allow. This should hopefully cure the problem.
Reg its got to be suspension / bushes ive taken
Thanks for all your comments, very helpfull, the tyres on all 4 wheels are Toyo Proxes T1 non runflats , first manufactured in 2011, with plenty of tread left. If it is down to tyre pressures where would they need to be ?
It's nice to know i'm not the only 'Z' nut on the planet
John I can vouch you're not the only nutter on here=))=))

Hi John, not sure if you solved this issue yet, It's the first time I've heard of a Z4 tramlining although it is quite common on Z3s, I think most of the known causes of tramlining have already been discussed on this thread, my money would be on a looses or worn suspension joint or Bush. Even a little play in the suspension will cause a Z3 to act as you describe.

By the way Welcome

Thanks Mike I will get the suspension looked at.

And thanks for all the messages of welcome it's very reassuring to know such a wealth of knowledge gained from experience is available, and by such a friendly bunch.
