So, to update and effectively close the thread.
It was definitely the tyre size that was the issue. Lucky for me, Halfords/National had a deal on Avon ZV7s, so 225/45 now fitted. No issues with clearance anymore.
Some users on here have said they fitted 225/50/17 with no issues, I dont think its possible with the standard suspension setup.
Anyway, job is done and I think they look great.

Avon ZV7s are excellent tyres. Easily the best for the price.

Agreed. Yes they are. I had read a few posts and threads on the subject when I first came on board. Great info, from great people, that gained that knowledge through experience.
