You'll be cleaning dust for years unfortunetly! It is so fine and gets into every book and cranny. Alan will be coughing up dust for quite a while unless he had a hood with a breathing filter. I use a urethane called Diamond Cote which only needs two coats and is the same stuff I used on the workbenches in the IA shop when I was teaching woodworking. Still looks great after 14 yrs. JIM

This is meant to be good stuff , just hope it lives up to what it says on the tin :p
Alan is now putting the 1st coat on , so I'm stuck in the living room for a few hours =))

It's just a clear varnish and Alan this he'd like a light colour on it now :p
 
I used that on all my woodwork projects both at school and home. If you get scratches just sand them gently and reoil, blends right in. Water resistant as well. Brings out the natural grain in the wood, even easier to apply. Varnish has been around forever and is one of the hardest coatings to care for properly. I usually put about 3-4 coats of a synthetic wax flooring coating over it that can be easily stripped off and redone periodically. Also, Alan can add a stain to the varnish for the final coats if he wants a bit of colour. HTH JIM
