I'm also interested BTW -- once the poor Z is fixed I'm planning to refurb the vanos, so having a set to play with would be awesome!

Good to see lots of interest, we also have an LSD Diff to play with.

We are based just on the M3 outside basingstoke.
A what to play with?!? I may need a diff for mine. See my conversation from yesterday in General Banter. Where would this workshop take place and when? I'm very interested to know more about my car. By 6 pots do you mean 6 cylinders?

Grumps

Always happy, apart from when I'm not 🤬

Yes 6 pot is 6 cylinders @ktnez99. Lee is based just outside Basingstoke. He does work on zeds for some members from his house.

If you want a diff to play with I have a non LSD one that I think has an issue with the output shaft bearings that you can open and diagnose and keep for whatever you want if you think it will be of use for research purposes - I can bring it if I ever get round there or give it to Martin. Please keep that 2.2 - its a great idea to use it for practice and learning.

Thanks Mario, we currently have an LSD stripped investigating the clonk most 6cyl models suffer with.

We've found the cause of the clonk just now waiting for bits to arrive to rebuild and test.

So what's the cause of the clonk is it that loose sleeve/bearing circled? Why did it fail and are uprated parts available? Clutch pack or torsen lsd? Mine is torsen a s makes sometimes a clunk like there is slack on the drive train but only in 1st if not careful with the clutch. The non lsd that I replaced made a grumbling noise and vibrated when you put torque through but was fine at lower speed/lower engine load

Hi Mario,

The item circled is the collapsible collar that you crush to set the pinion bearing preload , over time these relax allowing play to develop in the diff. A very common issue with BMW from 90s-2000.

The diff here is a Torsen. 3.15 from a 2.8.

If you have found that clonk source and a fix, it's going to be a looooong queue at the front of the zedshed soon :) :)
