Shirl just read about a Virgin airliner having to return to the stand at Manchester Airport to have the snow cleared fron it's wings. Lovely, Spring is here

Good call, it would never have got more than 50 feet or so off the ground, which would be a bad thing.Shirl just read about a Virgin airliner having to return to the stand at Manchester Airport to have the snow cleared fron it's wings. Lovely, Spring is here

Doh....
Correct on the snow/ice thing, however, the defrosting agents of which there are two types only have a finite time before it needs redoing (circa 20 mins). A thing layer of ice can form under the snow which disrupts the air flow over the wings making take off very difficult and impossible in some types of kites thus having to return. Your average reporter though does tend to sensationalise the issue.Absolute rubbish reporting, its not snow but ice that has to be cleared from the wings.
oo err guess what I did today..

Yeah, they do but it tends to be on the leading edges only. The problem comes when the top surface of the wing is not billiard table smooth which on some kites can be catostauphic as the air flow is not as it should be which can impare lift on take-off.WW2 Bombers had deicing built into the wings, don't planes have that now?
Probably a variation of ice prevention as the effect on some is worse than on others.I have been sat in a few planes that got sprayed with some kind of foam on the run way before take off.
Bit like being in a car wash.
Noisy sat at the back I bet.Flying in these things out of the mountains of Slovenia, sometimes 3 times a week.

Qwuaffing champersI was Business Class I will have you know, even though siting at the front means you are going to be one of the first to die in a crash. I must admit, my favorites are turbo props, that is proper flying.
