Winter tyres are a marketers bonus in England. Very rarely needed.
This is true, but on that one occasion they are needed they can stop you being an unintentional YouTube star =))

The LSD really helps you keep going in the snow (albeit a bit sideways) but the Z was the last non M car to have one fitted...

That’s probably true for the majority. However, the chunks missing from the kerb opposite us where cars come sliding down the road at various angles of attack instead of taking the bend show they have their uses.
Every time the road is icy or snow there will be several who fail to make the corner and it isn’t speed related. Most hit at below walking pace. At times it’s comical to watch unless someone is following as we pull on to our drive then it’s a Zaphod moment

I have had winter on every year for the past 9/10 years now on last and current daily driver.
I have tried a number of brands but one I dis find pretty good ( and as said above already ) they were Nokians.
Nokian is a Finnish company that specialises in winter tyres they do summer's as well but core business is winter tyres had a set on in the winter of 2010 when uk was like Siberia.
They done the job great that year in weeks of snow and ice with nightime temps down to -20 and daytime not above -10 Some days.
Climates are designed as an all season tyre so they lose a bit at either end of spectrum ( ie. Hot weather grip and at the other end grip in snow and ice ) but for what I have seen of them customers seem to like them and rate their all round abilities and wear rate.

As a footnote.
I would not run full winters all year round as the compound is not designed to run at high temp.
If keeping same on all year but more grip in winter needed the only real way to go would be an all season tyre like the cross climate a little sacrifice at either end of the scale but for the type of weather we usually got certainly worth a consider.
Stephen.
