Wind Deflector.

Homemade perspex one for me also, fastened on with cable ties, got some stainless steel ties to replace them next time so the are hidden against the chrome hoops. Buying some more perspex soon though to make another deflector as I have scratched this one so will put the steel cable ties on when I change it. Unsure of whether to go for a tinted one instead of clear this time though? :-?

Just 2 self tappers into the roll bars with a plastic cap over them ,been up to 95 with no problems

Thought about screws myself but have the standard roll hoops and didn't want to start drilling into them. Been thinking about a mk2 version of mine so might consider some type of cable tie like g8jka, but want something that I can remove when required.

Cable ties can come on and off pretty quick if you want to remove it, just means using new ones to reinstall. Other than that you can use velcro straps as they are reusable and with you having the standard hoops black velcro straps will blend in with black hoops. I would have used velcro if I had standard hoops but thought the black velcro wouldn't look right against chrome.

My roll hoops are the same as yours . . . do you know if a mesh deflector will fit over them? I've had both options and am currently using a newly purchased perspex one (which in my opinion is not so efficient) - but I miss the privacy the mesh one gives. :ymblushing:
 
I was totally surprised and very impressed at how effective the mesh wind deflector is. Really does cut down on buffetting (I may have made this word up but I know what I mean).

Just make sure you have your seat as low as it goes and with the deflector up it is most agreeable even at motorway speeds. I have owned a few cabriolets and I can tell you the Zed is by far the most civilized in terms of keeping billy wind at bay. :sportscar)

I have never had a mesh one so never had chance to try and fit one. I have seen people fit one over these hoops and they will go on, although the fit is not the best. I think the only option with the chrome hoops is a perspex one or none at all.

I prefer the perspex one to the mesh as I went in a zed with a mesh one and couldn't see through the back window :( But it is good how you can zip it down but I would want it up all the time. Only trouble with the perspex one is that the top storage box becomes out of use.

I cannot believe you made this yourself...Very impressed...should think about a production line?
 
Very impressed with the home made wind deflectors.

As i have not a hope this side of he second coming of Jesus Christ of making one, can we tempt someone to make them for us from this site( velcro my preference :))

Being mesh they make a good air filter :-q need washing from time to time.

The mesh deflector will go over these hoops, but it is tight going on the hoops, and a bit saggy in the middle.
It fits, but not particularly well..

Having just switched from a 3 to a 4 and experienced both recently with wind deflectors at speed I reckon the Z3 is definitely less windy than the Z4.

I don't think the Z4 heater is quite as good either. Or maybe I had fewer clothes on that day. :-?

The Z4 has both a bigger cabin and a less powerful heater, They are colder cars to drive than the Z3 even with a deflector.
 
Hmmm. Interesting you both find it colder in the Z4 because I found it the other way around. I've managed to get more comfortable at lower temperatures cruising in the Z4.

Managed minus 3 at motorway speeds in the Z4, and I have got hypothermia doing that in the Z3...

Are you talking about a 4 or 6 cylinder Z3?

I reckon the max air temp at the vent in the cabin was significantly higher in the Z3 (2.2) I had. I often adjusted it down from max even in the winter with top down! I drove the Z4 from Cairnryan in Scotland to Sunderland last Thurs with the top down the whole way and with the heater on full blast I really could have done with just a little bit more for perfect comfort at speed. It was a cold day mind and the heater in the Z4 is not rubbish by any stretch - it's just not quite as brutal as the one in my Z3 was.
 
I had the 6pot 2.0. Don't get me wrong, it only ever got cold enough to make me put the roof up once in 2 years. A darned efficient system, just always felt like it could do with a little more.
 
I don't know how the plastic doesn't melt with the heater in the m. Almost burns if you have your hand close to it for too long on max. I sometimes have to move the vents further away from my hands in sub zero temps as it gets too hot.
 
I had two 1.9 Z3's (M43 and M44)(still got the M43 one now), a 3.0 Z3, a 2.5se Z4 and a Z4M,
Z3's of all engines I have found to be warmer, and so has the missus.
The Z4 seems to get very cold in between the seats and at lap and high level, even though the vents blow very hot. Just don't seem to blow fast or far enough.
In fact the Z4M seems to have the poorest heater of the lot, (or maybe I am reaching colder speeds quicker ;) )
It burns your hands by the vents, but unfortunately I don't sit there. :D
