I just returned from sears department store. They will be closing this store soon. They had tires on sale. They were 15% off the regular price. However, they had a few tires that were sent off to the side that were 50% off. They were reduced because there were special orders that no one had picked up. Among these tires were two tires that are on the rear of my Z are 255/45/17. These tires are slightly smaller. They are two 245/45/17. eagle sport a/s and one pirelle cinturato P7 all season. I bought them anyway. It will be a slightly smaller tire. But I knew that they had to sell them because they are closing the store. I purchased all three tires for $200. I hope that the difference in the tires size will not matter. As many of you know, these tires do not last long on the back of a BMW. They only last for about 20,000 miles. They should last, at the rate I drive that car until I am about 98 years old. What is your opinion on how they will perform on the car?

The 108s I bought for my Z4 had Goodyear F1 Eagle tyres and they were very good grip and wear wise Frankie. P7s are also very good premium tyres so if you can buy another to make a pair.
$200 for those 3 I would say is a good price in those sizes. 10mm reduction in tyre width will not make a huge difference, I don't think you will see it, at least until you are 99 mate.;)

Should be ok, so long as the difference in size doesn't upset the DSC, if you've got it, that is. I ran a full set of new tyres on mine for a couple of years, had new ones on the front and left the rears for a week or so and it sent the DSC crazy, flashing on round almost every corner. I guess the system is a touch sensitive when the tyres are slightly different sizes, it was only a matter of new at one end and worn at the other.

The ones Frankie has bought are the same aspect ratio and only 10mm narrower on 17" wheels which results in 4.5mm difference in dia. I don't think that would be enough to trouble the DSC?

Tony.

If they are for the ///M they might fit the front I was considering that width for my next ones up from 235 but the 245 will defiantly fit standard rear width which I changed to 255 with plan on 265 for next set.

Didn't expect the difference between new at one end and near-as-damn-it worn out at the other to be enough to upset the DSC, but it did. And that was between Avons, mixing different manufacturers' tyres can bu88er things up.
Not quite the same thing, I know, but I changed the front tyres on our Quad a while back, same nominal sizes, different manufacturers, and that was when I found out why the Quad used to dart from side to side on tarmac, there was about 3 inches difference in the heights of the tyres.:wideyed: Won't be anything like that with car tyres (I hope) and it is only an annoying flashing light.

I would say the main reason you had the light one was because the worn out tyres were on the rear and during cornering were spinning up (loosing grip) under acceleration. I get that on my Z4 even with new tyres on all round when I'm a bit heavy footed, until the computer calms it all down and slaps my wrists.;)

Tony.

Don't recall any spinning up, wasn't trying. One time it kept happening I was leading a couple of friends, they were in a Vitara, no point going fast when you've got one of them tailing you, but the light kept flashing anyway. Problem long over, @FRANKIE will no doubt let us know how things go.

It might be a while. When I got the car, I was with @miller1098 in California.. The tires looked fine from what we could see standing looking at them on each side of the car but we never looked at the inside part of the tread and they were almost down to the steel belts. So we were doing 120 mph on Interstate 40. God must have been watching over us. When one tire blew out in West Virginia, we were shocked to see just how worn down it had been. It was at that point that we took a GOOD look at the other side and it was just as worn down. So, not having a spare tire in the ///M, I had to shop aroung the internet to get the size I needed for the back.255/45/17. No one had them. We were staying at the Best Western Motel and the lady behing the desk gave us the number of the place where she bought her tires, which wasn't listed on the internet. Thank God for her as her dealer had only 2 left. It cost me $460. for them to come out to us, remove both tires, take them back to their shop, and put new ones on the rims. That's why I jumped at the chance to get 3 tires, (2 GoodYears and one Pirelle for only $200. The thing is, since the tires that are on the rear are almost new, it might be a while before I'm going to use the ones I just bought at Sears. Since 3 of the same size would mean that I won't be using the two new GoodYears for a while and who knows when I would finally use the Pirelli. On line, the Pirelli costs about $175. I really went to Sears to get a good deal on tires for the 2000 Acura that I just bought to replace my rusted out (frame) Toyota pick up. They are 205/60/16. They only are taking off 15 percent on their regular stock so I passed on them. But it occured to me that I could sell the Pirelli online for about $125 or so with $15 for shipping and use the money to buy tires for the Acura. After all, I wouldn't use the Pirelli for such a long time anyway. At this time it occured to me to go over there and buy some other "special order" tires that people ordered but didn't pick up. If they're half price, I could still sell them, since they're brand new and unused, on the internet and make some extra money to buy a good set of tires for the Acura. It seems to be an opportunity I shouldn't pass up. Since they were unusual sizes, but still expensive tires, they were eager to get rid of them at a lower price, better that half off, just to get rid of them beform they close the store. Tires that are brand new and a good price are such hot sellers on the internet.....We'll see...................................Frankie

If you're thinking about keeping the tyres for a while before fitting them, be careful about storage. I know they look like just a lump of rubber, but they can be fussy. Also, if you look around the sidewalls you'll find some numbers moulded into them, not the normal size/pressure/load ones, but four digits in a row. That'll be the build date for the tyres, if, for example, it says 1218 it means the 12th week of 2018. Most tyres will be past their best after about 5-6 years. Not worth the risk once you get past that age. Or maybe I worry too much.;)

Thanks for the tip. I had checked this before I bought the tires and they were made at the end of last year. Should be ok........Frankie
