When I first got my z3 15 years ago the seatbelt guides on both seats were snapped in the usual place. I've repaired them a few times over the years.
Yesterday I was removing one of the seats so pressed the button to slide the seat forward to get at the back bolts. Almost immediately I noticed the backrest being pulled backwards. I stopped sliding the seat and felt the seatbelt. It was locked. With the buckle in this position (photo below) the guide was just a gnat's doodah from snapping again.
So. For some reason the inertia seatbelt mechanism locks occasionally for no good reason.
I drive the car with the seat back. Later Mrs Duncodin gets in and immediately slides the seat forward. If the inertia real is locked and the belt is in the position shown in the picture then that snaps the guide.
Might explain why so many are broken.
