Sorry Dave but 320 miles and return trip will equate to around £120 which is 2 tanks and you are right regarding driving round Europe i have done it for years but the best way to experience driving around Europe to get accustomed to doing it is surely to drive like i say just my opinion. Otherwise all people will do is take the shortest route without driving and miss everything that is good about driving abroad
Yes but he doesn't want to do the mileage. Sending him to Calais to drive to Brittany/Normandy is wrong. He wants to be near there to start so St Malo or Cherbourg are the answer not Calais.

He has not said where he wants to go just somewhere close to the arrival point hence why i put up about St Omer. He is only looking at a couple of days abroad and it would work out quite expensive for 2 to 3 days catching a ferry to any of the places mentioned down the western side of France. Approx cost £300 ferry + 11 hours + around £250 for hotels + 11hr ferry. Against £160 tunnel + 35 mins and around £250 Hotels +35 mins.
I know which i would do save £180 and use on days out, fuel and beer =))

He stated in his first post he was thinking of visiting Normandy Bill hence suggesting Portsmouth to St Malo. There is no mention on funds only the fact he doesn't want to drive to far from landing in France to Where he wants to visit. I am not understanding how anyone suggesting sending him to the wrong part of the country is going to help him??

If you read it correct he also mentions about Norther France. Well my understanding of Geography puts Calais in the North of France.

I've had my z3 for around 3 years now and had some really nice drives in it.
I've also read stories on here of Euro trips down to the mountains etc, but I'm not sure I'm up for that big a drive having not ventured off dear old Blighty before.
Well, I wouldn't mind taking my zed across the channel and do a few days around Normandy, somewhere not too far, yet somewhere different.
There must be a few interesting places to visit in Northern France, maybe the D-Day beaches for example.

We could rent a country/farm house as a base for a few days, hopefully a big driveway for a few zeds.

Just wondering if there are any other members who would fancy a mini euro trip for beginners.
As their weather is similar to ours I was thinking maybe late June, early July next year.

Is it best to go on ferry or through the tunnel?

My organisational skills aren't great, but I just thought I would put the question out there.

Where are the D day beaches? Last time I checked they we're in Normandy.

He also mentions about either the Ferry or the Tunnel being best. Well so far as i know they have not built a Tunnel to St Malo or anywhere near that area. YET

So we agree that the op wants to visit Normandy and Northern France and the best way is by car or catch another ferry if they do one from St Malo to Calais easy =))

@hard top is it possible to remove some of these posts as they are not being helpful to the OP. Sorry. and Thanks

We have been it all was well. We just appear to have a difference of opinion on this one. :)
