I bought a new Chevette in August 1978, Jamaica Yellow with Deerskin interior =)) I'd question articals stated cost though. Mine was £2785 less £400 trade in value for my old Fiat, and there's no way they'd go up £1200 in 3 years.

It was my first and only brand new car that I bought myself. I kept it for 9yrs and then sold it to my mates dad who then passed it on to my mates brother who then wrapped it around a tree :(

He lived to tell the tale but my Chevette went to the big scrappy in the sky. RIP CDH928T

She could tell a few tales if she was still around. She witnessed the consumation of one or two relationships too ;)

My ex brother in law had a chevette when he was a ‘ career ‘ student in the 1980’s. I spent 3 days changing the head gasket, lapping in valves, new thermostat, fixing a radiator leak and a couple of odd things that I found. His dad paid for all the bits....the cheapest we could get..(..Payen gasket set ? )
Took it out for a test drive to make sure everything was ok, ( which it was ) and then I scraped the passenger side on the gate post when I got back.
I was mortified..........but he was never that bothered about it.

The vauxhall shuv it! No wonder they're rare, they were built with enough defects to keep a young traffic cop busy whenever I saw one :D

48 Montegos is 48 too many IMO
Did my best, my one turned into rust last century. And I remember somewhere on the way to Scotland on the M6 a Montego Turbo (oooh flash:whistle:) went howling past us doing some illegal speed, got a couple of hundred yards past and vanished in a cloud of white smoke/steam:wideyed:. It was safely parked on the hard shoulder by the time we chortled our way by.:ymdevil:

No mention of the AlfaSud, does that mean they've all gone? Again, mine did many years ago. The Italians knew all about recycling a long time ago, eh?

Only 10 chevettes left, I saw one a few months ago. My father had an estate model. I quite liked it at the time.

Biggest issue with these "laid over" engines was if, sorry when, you got a rocker cover oil leak it puddled in a moulding of the exhaust manifold and combusted once you got to Gas Mk5!
My mate had a Viva with this motor and his did.

I had a Viva HB 1.6 with the single cam version of that slant engine. I think the twin cam 2.3 engine was also fitted into the Jensen Healey roadster. One of my neighbours had one and it was the very first roadster that I ever drove.

The first roadster I ever had a ride in was a Sunbeam Alpine. I got a lift to the Lincs. show when I was about 17.

I got my last speeding ticket in my Montego estate. Needle was reading 110 as we were cruising along the A50. Mr Plod asked me to confirm that he recorded me at 99. I was more than happy to say yes :).

Also, took it to Spain for a six week holiday. It is dusty on the Costa del Sol, and we came down one day to find the perfect imprint of the front parts of a buxom lady on the bonnet :wacky:.

It was a crackin' motor.

Thank the lord none of us are silly enough to buy cars with laid over engines, eh?

There's an old bloke in Nefyn with a Maestro. Just to compound the misery it's LHD.

One of these days I'll have the chance to ask him WTF is he up to, always seem to be heading in different directions. Which may be a good thing. Perhaps it's a priceless family heirloom. Or perhaps it isn't.

The first roadster I rode in was about 1968 - an Austin Healey 100/6, hot as you know what by Jack Brabham, sporting a 3 speed plus electric overdrive crash box by Jaguar. The driver knew what he was doing but I didn't and came very close to having dirty washing.

I had a late model 2.0 MG Maestro as a company car. I drove it mercilessly hard for over 80,000 miles and apart from servicing, brakes and tyres it needed nothing. Maybe I was lucky to get a properly assembled one, but it was one of the best cars I've ever had. As quick as a Golf GTi with handling like a big Mini.

I'm a bit surprised they reckon that there are so few Rover 2000s left as I see them at pretty much every car show I go to
