If you really want to experience tram lining try a Z4 on runflats! Totally ruined the one I had so I swapped to normal tyres and the difference was amazing.

Hi, hope everyone has had a good Xmas.
Iv just fitted my mates 16inch wheels (Bridgestone tyres) on to my Z3 which has 18inch wheels on, wow what a difference, no tram lining, transformed the car. Just confirmed what I suspected. The car came with 16inch wheels from the factory so by the end of January it will be on new rubber & wheels.
Interestingly the owner of the downer car (2.8 manual) was surprised at the difference in the performance, very surprised how much difference 200cc & 30 bhp make.

Wheel size has a definite impact on handling but that said there are many members running 18" wheels without problems and it seems to come down to tire make and tread pattern!! HTH JIM

E36 E46 anything 5x120 offset depends on rim width really but front et38 upwards 7.5-8.5j max
Rear depends on the model but again 7.5- 9.5 j
offsets can vary again depending on the zeds year but et38 up again with spacers the higher the offset.
Did loads of searching and looking at wheels and its a mine field rim profile also dictates as rim size is measured bead seat to bead seat so a chunky 8.5j rim is actually wider than a finer faced rimless one for instance.
I run an 8.5 et38 to front but on the rear i have a 9.5 et33 but need no spacers and they fit the wider prefacelift end perfectly.

As a rule 3 series wheels fit z4 wheels fit the 3 but they have a larger offset so require spacers to fill the arches.
5 series are too low in offset at about et20 so are no go as they stick out.
A great tool to check fit is here....

Add existing wheel details and then the new ones and it will tell you everything you need to know
