Z3 2.8 facelift. Z3 3.0i
Hi all

I'm looking to buy a nice 2.8 facelift or 3.0i and its not as easy as I thought.......is it?

I am struck by the 'spread' of the valuations on the cars on the market.
I can understand the current owner wants to maximize his selling price but there seems to be a bit of a problem.
There are a few lovely looking examples but we are talking 12/13/14 grand. I know that the car is worth what the buyer will pay but as a new entry into the market it is difficult not to think that I'm being asked top dollar.
Any thoughts ?

Condition > service history > mileage..at this age the first two are probably the most important and also the hardest to determine by looking at pictures online. Cars with all 3 will command a premium but usually you compromise at least one for another. A bit of research on here will show you what to look for and ask about..then the best thing to do is go and look at some (lots). Don’t be afraid to ask a trade seller to put it on a ramp so you can look underneath or show you a diagnostic scan. Check the MOT history on line before you look at one..look for signs like any recurring faults the seller hasn’t bothered to fix. Also consider how important things like air con, heated seats, electric roof are to you. Passenger and side air bags were also an option back then

There are still loads out there..a bit of knowledge will help you weed out the dross and the chancers. Depending on where you are you can always ask if a forum member can come with you to look at a car if you are not sure..or post ads here …most will have an honest opinion (some you may want to ignore though 🤣)
Btw The 2.2 Sport is worth a look..makes the best noise and ULEZ if that’s a consideration

If you actually intend to drive the car, I wouldn’t advise spending top dollar. Chances are you will still have to do a load of age related maintenance at some point. I thought I over paid when I bought mine for £4500 in Feb 22. It now owes me about £6k, which I don’t think I’ll get back if I was forced to sell now. However, I have done over 4000 miles in it, mostly with a very large smile on my sunburned face. Some people prefer to just look at the car and not put miles on. Each to their own.

That's the problem...............like most people I want a car I can enjoy but that isn't going to plummett in price if and when I sell

Striking the balance is the most difficult part of the decision making process. I have seen a 'nice' 3.0i , and driven it, and its sort of what I would want.....BUT it is not a very exciting colour combination. Has a few new bits, inc roof, water pump and front brakes and seems to be from a nice home. Asking 7.5k and got 70kish on the clock.
I know it's a good car but it didn't have that certain thing I am hoping the car I buy will have.

Bit like falling in love I spose.

I think with that budget i’d hold out for one that ticks all the boxes.

When you park your car and walk away you WILL turn and look back over your shoulder. You'll never stop doing that.

So do NOT buy unless you're 100% sure about what it looks like on the outside. Don't save a few quid by buying a color you're not sure about otherwise you'll be kicking yourself in the ar*e every time you look back.

Good advice.................Dakar yellow, that's the one for me ;)

My perception certainly at the upper end of the market is, that there are a lot of sellers out there that have their vehicles advertised at ridiculous prices. Further investigation reveals they have been for sale for typically six months or more and clearly they are not bothered whether they sell or not. Based on what I've actually seen sell a really good 3.0 (good history and not a thousand advisories with the emphasis on corrosion!) around 7k

My journey started when I realised that you could buy a reasonable Z3 or Z4 for less than £4k, even in winter when there are a LOT less for sale. I had been window shopping for everything interesting less than £5k for months, after a family member got a Porsche and got me onto the idea that I should actually have an interesting car of my own before I die.
Then one day I saw this 2.2 Z3 advert and agreed to buy it for £3500 unseen.

Fortunately my wife agreed that it wasn’t a totally stupid idea and that she could also use it to drive to work. With a £100 deposit paid I planned to catch the train to Bristol and drive it home if it was okay. Then the dealer’s family took him away for a surprise 50th birthday weekend and the trip was off for a week. I started to worry about the car’s MOT advisories and the general dirty and rusty state of its engine bay and the contaminated paintwork. Then I realised not all Z3’s were ULEZ exempt. I panicked and pulled my deposit.

More homework and test drives followed. I looked seriously at a few MX5’s and TT’s. None really made an impression. The main issue for me was that I have been very sensible for May years with reliable but boring 4 cylinder family cars. The engines just did nothing for me.

So with approval in principle, the search continued until I found this facelift Z4 2.5i.

It looked a bit lonely, surrounded by cheap hatchbacks at he dealers yard. I took it for a test drive on my own after one of the tyres was pumped up and fell in love with the engine. It was over my £5k limit, but it had a broken roof, no books and only one key, so I made several cheeky offers, but it was not to be, as the dealer asked for time to sort the roof himself and I got fed up and worried about the work being done on the cheap. I’m sure someone has enjoyed this car over the summer.

I looked at a few more cheap Z4’s at dealers…a mistake I think. Most of their roofs didn’t work and some felt terrible to drive.

Then drove a sub £4k 2.2 on a very wet day.

I got soaked as I got in for the test drive. Then as we set off I needed to reverse to let another car pass and realised it needed a new back window that that wasn’t totally cloudy. It’s still for sale, and I suspect very well saturated, but the stance on the staggered rims great and it sounded amazing.

Then drove a low mileage 2.2 that had been enthusiast owned up in Manchester.

Sounded great, drove nicely, but was very damp inside, the original radio didn’t work and it had a puddle in the boot. I think they were asking almost £8k, so I was never going to buy it.

The following day I saw another one almost the same but less damp that the owner had worked on with his grandfather. It was advertised on Autotrader for just under £5k, but I managed to haggle down to 4.5. The following day I found a link to an advert on Gumtree for the same car for £3950!

Anyway, much fun has happened since. First job was to remove the 3.0 emblem😀

A quality colour.

Hard to find on a 3.0. Also quite rare on the z3m as well.

Would agree with what others have said hold off till you find ' the one ' that ticks all the boxes colour is a big one if you buy one you only kinda like every time you see one in one of your more preferred colours you'll kick yourself for not hanging on.

Value retention is a fine line if you intend to add reasonable mileage to your zed then obviously value will be harder to maintain and on the other side of the same coin zeds are slowly creeping in price which is beneficial.

But personally I don't see the point of spending a chunk of money on a drivers car and then leaving it in a garage to gather dust sure you probably get a bit more on resale but where's the fun in that.

Stephen.

There's a 2.8 on 'car and classics', auction.... not a minter but not too bad.
problem is not being in a position to view before the auction ends

If it were early summer you'd probably think it worth a punt, as you've got the summer to enjoy before getting into work on the stuff that needs doing.
But I'm 64 nearly, do I want to spend weekends under my car ??

The Facebook UK Z Roadster page has a few 2.8’s around the £3k mark at present which seems cheap. It’s a good place to look for cars as several crop up all the time
