What would you do?

How’s this, unwritten way to behave in/on Brit roads and was taught to me on my six week residential HGV driving instructors course, that there is no right of way when approaching this zip situation on our roads and if we taught that fairness must be observed it would make these situations a lot more acceptable to the drivers of all lanes regardless of how long they would have to wait in the queue. I for one did teach these fairness points but as we all know they’ll be drivers out there that just don’t care.
Points I taught.

1. Stay calm
2. you have no right of way.
3. don’t forget the fairness rule.
Fairness rule.
If your not filtering in then let at least one vehicle in that needs to. This will eventually make both lanes (in theory) progress at the same rate. Stay calm if someone barges in (remembering that they think they'll be there for ever). If most drivers do this then the filtering will work fairly. There is no way in this world that every driver will be fair so the ones that are can congratulate themselves for at least trying. I taught HGV drivers to say to themselves that if it’s not an accident ahead with casualties then that’s a plus and not think in the NEGATIVE of how long will this take and how late will this make me.
As for the lorry driver in question, he should undergo further training and be made to pay for it. How to help this common situation on our roads would be to get advice to drivers ref a video on TV etc as it’s probably not being taught widely enough by driving instructors IMO. Police will only take action if they have the time and facilities plus enough evidence and are constantly badgered.
I myself take the advice of my instructor teachers to stay calm and let at least one vehicle in and if filtering in don’t push in. It works for me. No one is the winner in this sit on our roads. Could ask the ministry to put t/lights up at all these situations which in my view would make it fair but worse.
My advice to car drivers would be,Use both lanes and it will soon be to no advantage in either lane and give HGVs a wide bearth. To lorry drivers, don’t bully other road users cos they can make things a lot harder for you when you need them to give way because of your size. As professional drivers you should be setting an example.
Let's face it we all know two into one leads us to a minus. In this situ as far as I'm aware you haven't the right of way but you do have the right to GIVE way. Not rocket science is it.???

Lorry drivers in particular need to keep their cool as its their jobs the are putting at risk. I sat through a week of cpc training last month so I can drive a 7.5 ton Lorry. Its ridiculous as I have never had to take a test due to my age and the cpc now has no test either. All I had to do was stay awake for five days staring at a lesson taking place on zoom.

Lucky you. When I took my CPC it cost a small fortune and the test was really hard. However it did give me the qualifications to go owner driver and do traffic management if I wanted. Have taken around about 9 I think driving tests since 1965, that's not including a test to get a job at Bunsfield on Shell tankers. The pressure on HGV drivers is very high leading to drivers taking risks. Not acceptable of course but nevertheless is another thing that has to be dealt with. I personally have never missed HGV driving although there was a time when I really enjoyed it as a owner driver.

When I was told I was being put through the cpc I purchased a book and app as I thought I would have to take an exam. But due to covid it is all online with no exam.

In sunny Torquay, along the seafront, past Tor Abbey to be exact. We have a similar, but different situation.
The road is a dual carriageway with parking facilities all along the left side, this leaves @ two car widths to the kerb of the central reservation, there are NO markings other than the parking bays, after the parking bays, the road opens up into three lanes. On the left side of the road is Tor Abbey gardens, a large expanse of grass and trees etc. On the Right is the beach. As you drive along it, allowing for car doors opening, exited kids crossing etc. many people treat it as two lanes, and UNDERTAKE down the inside, very close to the parked cars! there are many 'near misses', Locals tent to keep in the middle to try to prevent this, I even do this on the motorcycle, the anger from the undertaking traffic is palpable.

On my way into work in Lincoln, just before the A46/A57 Carholme roundabout there is Long Leys Rd. on the left (Roy knows where I mean) and each morning there’s a queue of cars wanting to turn left to the roundabout. Everyday without fail I would let 1 vehicle out in front of me, most people did in actual fact, but, there would always be one who would try to race out in front of you not wanting 1 more vehicle in front of them. These are the type of idiots who tend to make you want to say “Sod it, stay there” and not let any out.

Tony.
