What is this hole meant for?

At the end of the sills, behind the wheel liners, there are two grommets, when these are removed you're left with a couple of holes. Question is what are they meant for?

When removing all the rust I exposed some weak metal in that area so I'm going to cut the steel out and weld a new plate there. Just wanted to know if the hole is functional or if a steel plate without any holes will do the trick.

Are they just drain holes? Or for when they put cavity wax in from factory?

This is what it should look like

Mine now looks like this..

They are drain holes to drain the phosphoric primer. The whole body is submerged in a tank so let's the paint in and then out when draining. When you have finished putting primer and paint on your hard metal I would get some of the easily spray and coat the inside of the sills and will covers before you put it all back together. Also replace the grommet in the hole.

Hope all is well with you

Hi Brian, definitely been a while, I'm okay thank you. Hope you're doing well!

I plan on spraying the sills with 2K Epoxy Primer and then a top coat of some sprayable seam sealer for added protection

Will be coating the inside with a litre of dinitrol cavity wax for each sill.

I guess my question was more around if it would be okay to weld the hole shut. The bottom hole is no longer circular and I was going to cut that section out and weld a plate in there, didn't know if I'd have to create a new hole. If it is just used to drain primer in the factory then my thoughts are that it isn't needed anymore?
