What is this for, or should i say what should this do?

on each side of the roof a small spring on both sides only attached to one side.

sorry not a great photo, will take another if needed.

+1 I'm assuming you aren't pointing at the joint, but something below it :-\

It's the tensioning spring for the roof lining to keep it taut.
The brass crimps which are hiddedn by a heat-shrink sleeve eventually give way, the cord disappears and you're left with a dangly spring.
