What did you do for a living in a past life ?

Which colliery was that @Brian4

Winding ropes were the Latch's biggest earner. The locked coil rope was old Mr Batchelor's invention

Job, who needs a job, I thought about getting one when my benefits couldn't cover the increase in my SKY subscription, so I now claim disability living allowance and am a full time carer for 13 members of my family. I saw a great program the other day on my 72 inch plasma curved TV which showed that I can get a cleaner in too (only 3 days a week) as my slave to clean my cesspit of a home that I have to slum it in as the council cant find a 6 bedder to house my 26 stone frame. I was interested to see if the cleaner will do my car, should do really.

Hi @Jack Ratt this is where I spent 17 years. We used to use latch and Batchelors for our winding ropes and ours was biggest in Europe at the time 2 1/4" fully locked coil 2 off of 750m.

My dad used to maintain this kind of stuff underground. He never let me near the mines but i used to read the stuff about retreat coal faces, Dosco Rippers. He would only work drift mines after a shaft accident - He's never said a single word about that.

I worked for 25 years in Telecommunications but doing many and varied jobs, from software, phone designs, installing networks, managing the data on Public Networks, Account manger for the ISPs in the early days of the internet. I miss the buzz. Working in the broadcast industry now - the rate of change is glacial by comparison.

Coventry Colliery near Corley Services on M6

I used to make the chain slings for Coventry Colliery when I worked for Lloyds at West Brom. I still work for Lloyds but now working out of Plymouth, Eastleigh and Dartford

I bet we kept you busy with those as we had a knack of breaking them. 18mm chains didn't stand much chance either.
Zurich keep me busy mainly in Rugby.

Hi Brian4
I like your Collier Arch's never had need for Gullicks as was" never" involved in removing coal.
Only removed coal once , to drive tunnel for conveyor from an opencast site down to railhead.
I only removed spoil, to obtain a finished tunnel, with permanent lining.

I started off in Agricultural Engineering from school in 1972, and that's where I learned how to repair and mend and make do (Farmers are a tight bunch). However that gave me a better base for what I do now, I often have to show people how to get things in pieces using skill and not just spanners. Been in the car job since 1977, when I realised the Agric. trade would never pay very much.

Tony.
