So. I’m not mechanically minded at all. Yet give me any DIY task around the home and I’ll do a great job. Building tiling plumbing painting and decorating etc.
So my day today started off with I’ll take the Z3 over to the painters to have the new hardtop sprayed. Easy as it’s already on the car. Pulled up loosened a couple of bolts at the front flicked the toggles in the rear job done the young lad gave me a hand with the top inside boom done take the car home get off to work.
Oh no never that easy so gets back in the car went to put up the soft top you guessed it nothing not a squeak. It’s 10 minutes from home. Bu&&er it drive home with the top down and sort it must be a fuse.
Gets home no fuses blown power to the soft top pump. So what is it ? By this time it’s getting on and I’ve got to be getting myself to work. But I can’t leave the Z with the top down all day. Bu&&er it again I’ll take it down to the local garage for them to have a look. As luck would have it there’s 5 of em just stood about. Told them what the problem was all stood about scratching their heads rechecked the fuses power to the pump motor etc put on some machine to test the circuits no issues there. Then the owner of said garage pops his head outa the doorway asks what’s the problem. So I tells him the whole story again at which point he says when you fitted the fixing kit you did put the wiring for the soft top back on ???
Erm no. 5 minutes later all plugged back in and top back up.
Did I not feel like an idiot !!
Can’t wait for the wiring loom to come for the rear demister switch I’m sure that’ll will give me another headache.

Thats funny, but a question, why unplug the power to the soft top when the HT is on?

For future reference their's a 'T' key on the reservoir in the boot, turn the key and the roof can be operated manually.

...why unplug the power to the soft top when the HT is on?...
The ram and electrics were disconnected on the 3.0. My theory is it's to stop somebody trying to raise the soft top when the hard top is on and damaging the pump or the frame of the soft top.

Why you would try to raise the soft top while the hard top is on is another question....but it takes all sorts;)

You're not an idiot Carl, just not familiar with the wiring;). You wont make that mistake again......and nobody else should now you've posted your misfortune here:)

And just to clarify, I thought you had been in our shop at work . . . . . . . ..;)

Tony

Plenty of Z3s to look at Carl that have or had a hard top.

Tony.

I remove the fuse for the soft top on mine when I fit the hardtop so the roof cannot be closed. Only because it's linked to a feature on my alarm fob and if the button is held down for a couple of seconds it will automatically close. It's never happened but could easily be done whilst in my pocket or if someone picks the fob up and starts playing with the buttons.

The wiring for the heated screen is simple from what I remember, you unplug a connection by the roof ram and the loom plugs in between the one that's been undone and then connect the two spade connections to the fitting kit.
