Well that went horrifically

So after reading loads of places online about popping headlights in the oven, 200degrees 15 mins.
Stuck one of my clear headlights in, 10 mins later went to check up and the entire headlight assembly was melted... almost flat!!
I've seen the funny side as it's a spare pair, but at resale value of £200 I'm gutted.
How did that happen so quick??

Where did you read that? I mean, 200C is a LOT, 15 minutes is a LOT! Where you trying to re-seal them or something?

I've opened up a couple of headlights before, not just ones for the Z3, you need to be careful when you do and check on it every few minutes, I left it in for 3-4 minutes at a time. If I remember rightly I set the oven to 100 degrees rather than 200.

Was probably in about 8/9 mins.

Maybe you read 200 degrees Fahrenheit?
It's more like 80 Celsius and less than 10 mins, done this a few times no issues.
that mud have smelt really bad!

Are you sure you didn't release any nasty chemicals by melting it? Probably me being paranoid but that is where food gets prepared.

Not even sure I would want to even gently warm one up in my oven. And if I tried it in my other half's oven you'd see the thing rammed up where the sun doesn't shine!

Not kidding. 200C will melt any plastic. I melt ABS at 220C in my 3d printer, and it's LIQUID at that temperature (for printing), most plastics will not just melt, but combust at lower temps than that!

100 deg for 5 to 10 minutes I have done it a couple of times.

If you've been reading anything American it would have been.

jesus! I'm not surprised. I stick them in at 110 for 4-6 minutes. That's enough to soften the glue to prize open.

Did you take it straight from the freezer and into the oven?
Maybe you should have defrosted it overnight!

There's nothing released that would be harmful to food, unless it was in the oven at the same time.
Although l would always put the item on a metal tray.
Mind you, at 200deg C you could have slung the Sunday roast in as well, why waste the heat.

When the Mrs gets back home tomorrow to melted plastic on her oven tray I'm going to need to stay with someone for the weekend. Anyone wanna put me up?
