Someone at work today told me there had been a discussion on FB regarding these Red weather alerts. One person stated that if you drive during a Red alert your car insurance would be void. Is there any substance to this statement?

Tony.

I'd say without a doubt (just my view). The insurance company would quote that you'd ignored official advice, I'd say.

They use any excuse to get out of paying a claim !!!

But does that mean Ambulances, Police Cars and Fire Engines wouldn’t be covered to attend an RTA???

It depends on if it’s essential or not I would have thought. If it is an emergency to prevent injury or worse then any of us would do what is necessary.
These conditions are challenging but not immediately threatening to life like high winds.
If you have the right vehicle and training you exposure to risk is lower.
The problem is that anyone who does venture out and is not equipped then needs help themselves are putting others at risk unnecessarily.
I expect that insurers to look dimly on anyone wilfully not heeding advice but an outright refusal to provide insurance cover seems draconian.
We have all seen worse conditions than this in our lifetime, but then, more and more people seem to have no common sense and have to be told what to do.

Not likely, a different criteria would apply, and they're well trained and to a much higher level than the ordinary motorist.

Two serious and accurate reply’s and I agree with both @Redline and @Andy McDonnell
.......I forgot to put a =)) at the end of the sentence. .....DOH !

Don’t the blue light services cover liability through a bond rather than insurance?
Have heard tales of big problems getting insurance sorted when you’re involved in an accident with the.

Just nicked off a Landy forum.
“Social media claims that motor insurance will be invalid if people drive during a red warning are not true,” said Malcolm Tarling, from the Association of British Insurers.
“Motor insurance will cover you in the usual way, providing you are driving within the law.”

I believe so Ian but never looked into it. It has to be a different concept due to what it is.

I have never seen any clause or exclusion in any insurance policy saying this would be the case. Surely it has to be in the contract and can't be just added willy nilly. I wonder if it is just an internet rumour that has gone viral.
If they wouldn't pay up, I would say show me where it states that.

Edit: just seen the post above so social media strikes again amongst the 17 year olds that can't live without it.
The internet is full of information, and sh1t, in equal measures.

Also did you know that should you go out when it's snowy and cold, and the Utility companies find out, they can switch off your gas supply as you have proven you don't need to be warm. Just saying..
